Toms still has a chart but it isn't as nice as it use to be.

My approximations:

Raw performance clock for clock:
Wolfdale/Yorkfield (E7000, E8000, Q9000)
Phenom (beyond clock speed that you may or may not reach, otherwise Kentsfield is faster)
Conroe/Kentsfield (E4000, E6000, Q6000)
Windsor (Athlon X2 with 1MB cache per core)
Brisbane (Athlon X2 with 512KB cache per core)

Overclocking potential:
Conroe/Kentsfield
Wolfdale/Yorkfield
Brisbane
Phenom
Windsor

Energy per clock:
Wolfdale/Yorkfield
Conroe/Kentsfield
Brisbane
Phenom
Windsor

AMD boards I would buy AM2+ boards with support for high wattage CPU (incase you upgrade to Phenom later and want the future CPU support.

Intel, LGA775 is end-of-line so just make sure it has Penryn (Wolfdale/Yorkfield) support. I would get a cheap P35 board over 650i any day (runs cooler and overclocks very well, who needs SLI anyway?).

What are you upgrading from? The X2 4800+?

If so I wouldn't touch the 5600+, it just isn't a big enough jump (heck, you could overclock the difference).

I also wouldn't be keen on a lower end Core 2, at a minimum I'd pick a E8000 series Wolfdale.

I'd also make the RAM upgrade 2x2GB, RAM is pretty cheap right now and you already have 2GB of DDR.

Thanks for the response it does help.Im upgrading my sons single core amd64 3500 with 1 gig ram.I'll take a look at toms chart and see what comes in.
Didn't know lga775was end of line so i will watch what i buy.
Cheers :)
