yea I would certainly go down the 4790k route. you have the board and ram already. you might get a few quid back on the i3.

I just got a free Z97 board so sold my lads FX8350 and crosshair v formula z board.
used the funds from that to buy a 4790k dropped the 4790k into my machine and gave him my 4770k.

I know folk will say its a deal platform but as said above there still going strong and are coping well with modern games.
I can see me needing to upgrade my board and CPU for a few years.

+1 for a 4790k. I've had mine since 2014 and it still performs superbly. Mines not even overlocked and it still slices through every game.
