CPU choice in a new £800 build

Guys im kinda backtracking on this at the moment because the cost of my build is a bit higher than i really wanted.

Would i be really crippling myself if i still went for the z170 board but put a £100 dual core i3 in it instead? Id have a future upgrade path to a k processor in the future. With the stock cooler id save £120 on my build, nearly enough for a cheap laptop to use when im not on the big rig.

imo dont get anything less than the 6600k. why cant you manage to build a 6600k complete system for under £800 ?? looks very doable to me so you must be going wrong somewhere

If he's going i5 what's wrong with the 6400 @ 4.4 Ghz bundle? it will perform exactly the same as a 6600k @ 4.4Ghz. it's not as if the 6600k will reach 5Ghz is it.

Only that overclocking locked processors is a hack. There are several problems with that, says on the product page itself:

**Please Note**
Some power saving features have to be disabled in the BIOS, so this bundle will draw more power than a typical dual [quad] core setup.
Updating the CPU microcode via BIOS update or software may effect the ovreclocking of this bundle. So once installed CPU microcode on provided BIOS should remain the same. We can only guarantee the overclock on the the CPU microcode which is provided when you receive the bundle.

I wouldn't get one tbh. Plus if 8 G of RAM is acceptable the saving over 6600K bundle + 8 G RAM + cheap cooler isn't huge, only about a tenner.

If you don't mind going down the AMD route get a AMD Athlon II X4 845. Don't let the low price fool you either, it uses the latest excavator architecture which clock for clock puts it well ahead of that Bulldozer rubbish from 2012.

The only draw back is the FM2+ platform isn't briming with all the mod cons that a z170 chipset will bring but to be fair your missing out on much (NVME for example, fast transfer times but Vs an SATA SSD you won't see any real world benefits beyond benchmarks scores).

The other advantage of going down this route is it frees up quite a bit of budget for a better video card.

Appreciate the comments.

Dropping to an Athlon X4 would save me £210 over an Intel i5-6600k build. It is a lot of difference.

How do I decide if a 6600k is worth an extra £210 in my build?

Get the 6400 bundle I've had it since January. I've had no problems with it, everything runs fine. Only thing that worries me is that, what if I need to upgrade my bios when I get a new graphics card?

Only solution would be to buy a new CPU ( a cheap 2nd hand i7 maybe ) and update the bios. I'm talking a year from now though.

They're two completely different classes of component; they don't really compare.

I've just noticed that the i5-6600K has gone up in price on OCUK by a tenner since I was looking a couple days ago......

What about dropping to an i3? I could save £100 on my build by doing this one change alone, and still be on modern processors.

Where are the best CPU comparison charts? Google brings up passmark which I was previously told was not very good measures.

For gaming the Tom's Hardware best gaming CPU article I posted is the best IMO.

For other stuff there's http://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU/

Other than that search around for reviews of specific components, or CPU shoot-outs (e.g. search for "x CPU benchmarks" where x is a game).
