CPU cooler advice needed please

The king of the Thermalright air coolers at the moment is the Royal Pretor 130 for around £42. You can read a review here, it's a real beast of a cooler.
yeah that one i was also looking at im going to see if my mate finds it not too errrr overbearing aesthetically
i love my massive over the top looks like the engine from a vintage motorbike almost look of my silly tower cooler but i guess im in the minority on that one lol
but yeah i think im gonna try get him that tbh it is a few mm smaller than mine ............... what more do you want ??? LOL!
i was expecting that to be far more expensive tbf lol

Nope, you're not the only one. The idea of a skyscraper that nearly ***** the side panel glass, maketh a good air cooled build!
I personally love squeezing the biggest hardware into small cases - take your mind out the gutter! :P

Noctua owner here - very pleased but expernsive !

Would I buy again - yes if like me you are looking for silence (near enough!) and not to have to empty, clean and refill every few months then the noctua is a worthwhile investment.

I like that they supplied a AM5 adapter set to allow me to re-use from my 1366. Although they're available to purchase for a about a tenner they sent me one free of charge.

Either way would be happy to pay the £10 for the adapter set, rather than buying a whole new cooler

yeah im a big noctua fan [pun intended] but i also dont think a lot of people get the real benefit of the extra costs
i mean i had a bit of a panic [exaggeration there] when i went to change case to my new corsair frame
wasnt sure if it would fit the cooler because according to the spec sheets i had like a mm either way
i asked them if they had any ideas and got a message saying will reply soon [not those exact words it was far more professional than will reply soon]
a day or so later i get an email saying they had just checked my cooler with the same case as they had both and confirmed it will in fact be fine even with
the fan pushed up a couple of mm to allow for the ram
and also similar experience a few months before when i bought my motherboard and it came without the mouting frame bracket back plate thingy
they sent me one and a noctua keyring at no charge despite me being clear that this is not a warranty thing i purchased a used mobo and fully expected
to pay for it
they sent me like 4 sets of fan clips as well because i mentioned wanting to try the 3rd fan on the cooler
however a lot of users would be better off with the half price options listed in this and other similar threads
i absolutely fully accept that the point of diminishing returns was probably met and some people would benefit more from
having the cash left over for other parts instead
i just like to pretend im posh or something
but yeah noctua the support and help etc is great
i wouldnt say its worth the extra for a lot of people though
the majority of users dont need their hands held like i do lol

Sorry for late replies. A few times after turning on my PC it hangs and gives an error abut overclocking and reverting to previous settings. I only applied an automatic and small OC. What software / tool can I use to test and report temps for people here to decide whether the cooler needs changing?

It's crazy lol. I gave my 5900x to my daughter when I upgraded, and went and got my D14 that I bought in 2010 out of the loft and got them to send me the free adapter for AM4 lol. I was last using it with my 4790k, and my 970 before that!

Cinebench and hwinfo.

I have both noctua and thermalright in my PC's at the moment.

It's pretty much impossible to recommend the Noctua when you look at the price V's performance.

Given you can get the Thermalright Royal Pretor 130 for £40 and it's pretty much the best air cooler on the market, yeah it's extremely difficult to recommend Noctua. The thing competes with some 360mm AiO's in testing, and the Royal Knight isn't far behind either tbh.

Totally correct.
Noctua put a crazy amount of money into R&D. Then someone like thermalright comes along and copies the tech and sells it for half the price.

It's called capitalism.

I wouldn't say they've copied their tech, Thermalright predates Noctua by around 4-5 years.

They've also surpassed Noctua (and every other air based heatsink company) by a fair margin in terms of raw cooling performance, whether or not Noctua spend a lot on R&D isn't saying too much as most of it seems to be on marketing of late. I'd argue that it might be the case for some fan designs and that is an area Noctua shines more than anything else, but not in terms of the raw metal of the heatsink.

Yeah I agree with that.. tower style coolers with heat pipes are what they are, they are a mature technology, so any 'twin tower ' style radiator is going to perform roughly the same as any other, assuming approx. the same sizes and same air flow etc.
