Guys, i currently have a Stock Cooler on top of my CPU, if i was to take it off and put it on a new motherboard will i have to apply some kind of paste or super glue of some sort or does it fit right on top????

the reason i am asking is because i am getting a new Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L motherboard soon

Yes, if you ever remove the heatsink and fan from the CPU then you need to apply thermal paste as it conducts heats from the CPU to the heatsink.

YouTube has plenty of videos showing you how to apply it.

If yoy have no intention to overclock the CPU then the stock HSF will be fine. Aftermarket coolers are also generally quieter. Make sure your case is larger enough to accomodate it.

You need some solution to clean off the old thermal paste, such as;
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=TH-000-AC

Then just apply a small peashaped amount in the middle of the chip and place your heatsink on top. A lot of heatsinks come with this, and some even pre-applied like my old Corsair H-50.

Won't be needing the thermal material remover as im getting a brand new motherboard.

however, thanks guys, just bout to order a new board and a new CPU cooler so just want to clear up all the loose ends before i click buy.

If you're taking the heatsink off your CPU, and putting a new CPU cooler on it you will have to take the thermal paste off and re-apply.

might help to mention your current cpu, heatsink and motherboard

Q660 G0 @ 2.4 Ghz
Normal Coolermaster Stock Cooler
****ty Foxconn motherboard ATM

let me just make it clearer, im going to remove my CPU, CPU Stock Cooler and put t on a new motherboard, so from what you guys are telling me, this is what i must do.

1 - Get the new motherboard
2 - put the cpu in and apply thermal compound on top
3 - stick the Heatsink and CPU Fan on top of the thermal compound and connect it to motherboard, and walaaa your done?

correct ??

The CPU will currently have thermal compount on, remove this. Place it in the new board, apply new thermal paste and then put on the heatsink. It's relatively easy I replaced my stock cooler for a A70 last week and they were the steps needed.

i know im being a tight arse but is there anyway to remove the thermal paste on my cpu without buying the thermal paste remover?

Well what you usually do is scrape it off with some plastic or card, sort of like a scratch-card. Then you apply the remover to get any bits left over and 'purify' the surface. I wouldn't like to say it would be great, but I suppose if you did a really good job of removing it with some stiff plastic you may be okay.

personally, i just use kitchen roll, keep rubbing the cpu until the kitchen roll stops going black.
i have done this at least 6 times with no problems

100% sure this is fine and won't damage the cpu in anyway?

i have never had a problem.
just use common sense, remove cpu from motherboard and place between fingers and start by removing the old paste with kitchen roll.
then when all of it is off, i use a clean sheet and just start by wiping it, with not too much pressure.
at first there will be a black smear on the kitchen roll, but keep using fresh parts of the sheet and eventually it will rub clear
it takes about 10 mins usually, but as i said, i have never had a problem,
but no doubt some will disagree with me
i have also heard that nail polish remover can be used, but you would have to check that out yourself, as i have never used it

I used kitchen roll to clean off the thermal compound off my old cpu yesterday. if it wipes off then fine but It maybe solid if its old. You will then require something with a high alcohol content to clean it off. Ive used vodka and even aftershave in the past :D

8 years a member with 4000+ posts on Overclockers UK and you're asking these questions?

Are you pulling our legs?

If you really didnt know the answers to these questions I would do a LOT of reading before messing about with your rig.

Also for a few quid more you can get the G41 mobo.
