cpu freezing

did that this morning, i'm thinking its something to do with empire total wars directx install as it could corrupt the install. crysis worked this morning with just a clean install of windows but after i installed empire the prob is back.

That does make sense. If crysis worked fine then your system should be fine. Do you have access to another install of that game? OR can you download the latest version of Directx and just refuse the games install option of Directx?

there doesnt appear to be any other directx 11 downloads available, the only download i can find is a 9.0c file.

the prob is still continuing :(

updated directx to june 2010 from microsoft website

wondering if the q6600 is drawing more power than the e6600 that was in before?

just loaded all four cores, temps never went above 51c but windows froze. so it looks like the cpu is bust

Not the CPU it is either that your CPU needs a touch more voltage or that the PSU is not up to the task I would suggest. Can you get hold of another PSU to test with if bumping the voltage up a bit more does not help.

It is really hard to kill a Q6600 CPU mate. I promise you.

swapped the Q6600 out for the orginal E6600, handbrake is now stable. ive put the Q6600 back into the acer i got it from and running some test on it. the acer psu wont power up my board. i was running 1.3500v though the quad and even went up to 1.4 but didnt change anything.

its def the Q6600 causing this, the orginal acer it came out of is freezing when running handbrake. guess a free upgrade wasnt for me. what can i do now with it?

Sorry to hear that mate. You could sell the CPU as faulty I guess.

Since you have come to terms with the CPU being dead yes, put 1.45 volts in bios and see it it works better. The Q6600 needed quite a bit more volts than the E6600 - remember it is two E6600 CPU's sandwiched on top of each other.

the E6600 is working fine in the same mobo, so i dont think theres any bent pins. also it was put in another mobo and it behaved exactly the same.

Time to RMA the CPU to Intel mate. I would not be surprised if it is still within the time period. Give them a call. You do not need the original invoice by the way.

cool will sort that out, acer system was built 2008 so still within 3 years. :)

cheers for all your help. e6600 booting at 3.0 and current idle temp 16 and 17c was as low as 13 a one point.

Wow, never heard of a duff CPU before! Although of course it's inevitable that a few bad chips can slip through.

Rocking a Q6600 myself. I paid £105 for it in Sep '08, still running like a champ

Yeah it is my first q6600 fail that I have come across since they were released. But heck it does happen I guess.
