CPU Frequency?

Hello, Have been playing for the first time with overclocking (with a newly obtained second hand Athlon 4X 860K).

Using AMD overdrive I have overclocked it to 4.2GHz from its normal 3.7gHz and it runs OK at 4.2. using a demo flight simulator.

When I am running "no Programmes" it ticks over at 1.695GHz. Is this normal? what decides the 1695MHz frequency? thanks

It’s the multiplier that changes. Presumably that frequency is some fraction of the CPU’s full speed.

1695/3700 - 45.8% !!

Mine drops to about 800mhz but that's rare. I normally have a lot running at the same time.

A quick Google shows that the minimum multiplier for that CPU is 17.

17 x 100MHz FSB = 1700MHz which within margin of error is what you're seeing at idle.
