CPU FUZED to heatsink. Help?

So i finished and turned on my new build yesterday, but was not happy with idle temps. Decided to apply new paste today, took out the heatsink, and it ripped the processor out with it!!! Luckily no bent or broken pins, but it's not fuzed to the heatsink. How can i get this off without breaking it?

It's a 1090t with stock heatsink/fan.

sounds like poor quality TIM...

it needs to be gently heated for it to come off so i would have a really good gaming/benching session to heat up the chip which will make the TIM nice and viscous and you can then remove the heatsink :)

Yeah he cant re-socket the chip with the heatsink on it because the latch is in the way.

I've had this happen to me before, I found that using a hair dryer on the heatsink side will cause the paste to loosen. Be careful not to wedge the chip away too hard or anything like that though because it will jolt off suddenly and pins may be damaged.

Phew! Bloody AMD paste :/ Got it off by running the hard dryer to warm up the paste. Anyway, i used some mx-4 paste instead, but idle temp is still around the same mark. Should I just accept that i have a hot running CPU and this is the best ill do with the stock cooler?

I havent installed OS yet so couldn't say. I'll do that and come back later. Thanks mate!

thats why,amd cool and quiet and same for intel speedstep only work when the os is installed,it wont auto downclock the cpu speed and voltages in the bios, hence higher temps

once in the os it will and idle temps/voltages will drop

and one final tip, never try to brute force the cpu from the heatsink, a simple twist with the strength of a 5yo girl will remove it.

:p

I'd rather ask here than start a new thread. Is it possible to have windows and documents on one hard drive and programs on another? Or do programs need to be on the same partition as windows, due to registry?

e.g.

C:/ = W7 and Documents/files
E:/ = Programs and games

p.s. using my new system to type this :P

I think the only way to move the pre-installed programs (i.e. Program Files) is to use something like nLite or vLite if such a tool exists for Windows 7.

If you wanna install programs not included with the OS on another partition that is fine. Programs don't have to reside in the Program Files folders.

Thanks very much, this is what I was after. I sort of already figured it out, as I remembered i used to have a seperate hard drive altogether for fs9, and it ran fine.

So i think it would be efficient to have any large programs or games on a seperate hard drive to my windows installation and documents.

Those idle temps are warm though. Mine idles at 31c and I have the heating on.

I never could work out why some people say idle temperatures do not matter. There's so many factors come into this and if it's high to begin with, the load temperature will be higher as well.
I've seen some people here recently and the heatsink (aftermarket) wasn't quite mounted perfectly. So because of that after the refit, their idle and load temperatures dropped down by 7 - 10 degrees.

Central heating.
Size of case.
Case ambient.
Position of case in a room.
How many fans. (Size, speed and positions)
How messy a case is.
How good the air flow in the case is. (Can fall back to case position or a room with lack of fresh air)
What kind of heatsink. (As we know already)
Kind of paste. (We know that too. Though there are always some that throw it about like toothpaste, or too little)
How has the CPU/Heatsink been cleaned. (I've seen people clean their CPU/heatsinks and there's still a slight greasy film from the previous paste)
Was it a rushed job. (Heatsink temporarily placed on then back off. Areas contaminated with fingerprints... it does happen)
Even tissue fibers from the cleaning fluids as they dry.

So many factors.

Smoky environment can be terrible as well over months/years. Mucky/greasy contaminated surfaces as well as clogging up fins.

Yes, they seem slightly warm I agree. Will have to look into aftermarket coolers maybe. Getting 38c now in windows.

Can anyone recommend a decent program to stress the CPU, so i can check stability and temps?
