CPU lapped and Tuniq fan changed - WOW!

i dont run it at 3.4ghz. i run at 3.0ghz. its a tuniq tower which im not too happy with anyway. its too loud.

I found mine was quite loud, I think I'm going to replace the fan like the OP did.

BTW, try increasing the exhaust fan in your case. I found that my idles and loads were both high but with the case fans on medium my temps dropped substantially.

I can here my tuniq in my P180 case, although the case does quieten it loads.

Replacing all mu fans with Nexus ones, that should do the trick.

65-70c on both cores @ 3.4ghz/1.4v using intel TAT.

its not lapping that im worried about, its sending it back if i have a problem with it.

65-70C is fine. As long as they are not throttling, there isn't any problem with that. While some very lucky folks do get their E6600's to run at 3.8GHz on the stock cooler with a maximum Gromacs load test of 50C, I'm certain I don't need to tell you that every CPU is different etc. etc.

I certainly couldn't recommend lapping a CPU for a 10C temperature drop.

Lapping for me, is a no brainer. There's no way I would do it as the resale value of the CPU would totally plummet!

nope, thats quite right. if it was a £50 cpu id be all over it by now but the truth is its not worth doing. im gonna try remounting the heatsink in a minute but i dont have high hopes lol.

I must say I'm surprised its a Tuniq you're using. Mine has been absolutely brilliant.

It refuses to let my E6300 go above 50 on full load. To be fair this is on full-whack, but I honestly cannot hear it through my P180 ;)

Honestly - I can't hear a thing :)
All the case fans are set on Low, as realistically, I don't need them to go any higher.
To be fair Pandora is always on in the background, but when that goes off the Pc stays on and I can quite happily go to sleep with it 3 foot away from the bed

yes and me. there's no way that fan up full is inaudiable. i've got 6 120mm fans in my mozart tx case and i can easily her at above the rest unless i run it at ~70%

I'm telling you I can't hear it! Maybe my ambient sound is higher or something.....When I get home from work tonight I'll check the speed controls and make sure everyhting is fine. I remember when I installed in the noise change was quite dramatic, but once inside the case I never noticed a thing.....

Maybe the dial is buggered, but if it is, I certainly haven't had any temps to complain about

I'm sorry but I don't agree with that. I've got a P180 with the stock Tri-cools replaced with Noctua 120's and when I had a Tuniq fitted I thought it made a right racket, it was audible (although acceptable) even on low.

ok well ive just had my e6600 out. its pretty flat. it's actually slightly lower at the corners so i certainly wont bother lapping it. i did however reapply the paste.

....and its made very little difference. tat reads 65c+ on both cores at 3.25ghz. :/

That does sound high for the amount of Vcore...the temps do seem to jump a lot over 1.4 but that's about 8-9c higher than I had at 1.425.

You can agree or disagree all you want mate...it makes no difference to me :D

Maybe I just got very lucky?! ......Or maybe the bloody thing is broke...hahaha

did anyone else try undervolting? Can anyone else get 3GHz on 1.22V? Left priming on the Gromacs orthos dual test for about 18 hours and was still going strong when i got home, highest reported temperature was 54C according to TAT and that's with a badly applied ninja. Gonna order more AS5 and reseat it, not going to lap mine though!
There really can't be much performance difference between 3000 and 3250, when i went from 2800 to 3000 it was about half a second on super pi 1mb. And i'd much rather run at 1.22V with low temps than 1.4V and high temps for a tiny bit more speed.
Makes me wonder what my E6400 is capable of if it was water cooled.

Managed 1.28v on my 6600 at 3.015GHz. It ORTHOS did it's nut if I tried 1.24V, but I am happy with that overclock/heat/stability compromise. Now all I have to do is replace the fans and the noise will be in check to.

To the OP (if about) was it easy to replace the fan in the Tuniq?

Replacing the Tuniq fan is an absolute doddle. You just take out the 4 screws on the top, lift it up and out comes that whole central section. You don't need to remove the heatsink itself from the motherboard, but mine was off anyway as I'd obviously just lapped the CPU, but there is no need to remove it. The fan section is totally separate. The fan then just unscrews from within this central section and you slide in a new one, then put back into the Tuniq itself. Could not be easier. :)

Cheers Legend, I was hoping it would be something like that :D Got a bulk order of Nexus fans coming in, hopefully that will silence this system :)

One of them is definitely going in.

Just out of interest, with the Tuniq, which combination of CPU/Speed/VCore/Max Temp are you running at?

I have not even begun to OC yet and am still running at stock with everything. Only had system running for just over a week, and a bit busy at the mo to get stuck into that, but I will be soon. Fan speed on my CPU is about 1200 (S-Flex 1200 fan in there). Max temp is hitting 50 in Orthos after about an hour and a half. That is just stock though - not sure how much that could rise when I OC.

My rear fan and front fan are only working at 800RPM for some reason though (controlled by the motherboard/bios it seems). They are both 1200RPM fans, so them running at full speed would probably knock a couple of degrees off.

Here is my rig by the way...

Hi Legend, that looks nice!

Nothing wrong with it still running at stock, I normally leave my new systems at stock for a week or two while sussing out drivers and stuff and its good to get an idea of stock temps before you start overclocking.

I noticed that if a new piece of hardware is in anyway faulty you find out about it the first few days (I've had GPU's PSU's all give up after 48 hours!).

What case is that btw?
