Hi,

How long does a tube of thermal paste keep for? I have a tube of MX 4 which is about 6 years old..will it be still usable,by which i mean, would it have lost some of its efficacy over time?

Cheers

As long as it's remained properly/adequately sealed and the consistency seems ok(squirt a small amount out), i'd expect it to be fine. I've been using my arctic silver for the last 6 years or so(goes a long way if you only do a system or two once a year) and it's still working just great, getting close to empty but still working as good as it always has, as far as i can tell.

As said already though, for the sake of a few quid, a new tube wouldn't hurt.

I’m not really a believer in good quality thermal paste “losing efficiency”, perhaps over many years but people who say they re-paste everything they own every year is just being silly. If it’s in the tube and still the right consistency I’d be 99% certain it’s be working as well and lasting as long once applied as a brand new tube - but then it is only a couple of quid to be 100% certain.

Yes the consistency is still the same as when bought, but does it lose any thermal qualities over time? ...that's what i'd like to know.

I bought a big tube of MX-2 a few years ago. Each application consistently dried up after 6 months or so. So it does happen. And it was rather liquidy from the start. What I cannot tell you is whether it has to do with production flaws for a particular batch, time since production, or whether it was stored a long time in imperfect conditions. It would start off fine, then 6 months later temps would start shooting up till I re-pasted. The same has not happened with Arctic Silver 5 or Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. Not everyone who's used MX-2 has reported the same, so it was probably a bad batch.

My Arctic silver 5 paste is starting to separate in the tub after 5 years
It seams like oil is separating
Not a lot but noticeble
Am using thermal grizzly at the moment

I use mine within a year, though the Kryonaut paste I'm using now comes in a ziplock bag with desiccant so may last longer.

It's a pretty inexpensive consumable - I'd rather order some fresh than have to reassemble the heatsink again.
