computer won't boot after a new build, need urgent advice. On the 8 pin psu connector, the ports don't match up fully.

e.g. the female on my z97 is:

bottom rounded square - square - square - bottom rounded square
square - bottom rounded square - bottom rounded square - square

but the mail 4+4 pin from my psu has 6 x bottom rounded squares (sorry i don't know how else to explain them) and only 2 squares. is this why my pc won't even post?

Hi it would probably be easier for you to take some photographs. Make sure everything is seated properly and that your not trying to plug the cpu 8 pin into the gpu or the other way around

EDIT the 4+4 pin sounds more like the CPU motherboard connector but once again this will be easier to tell with photographs ( CPU pins tend to be 4+4 pin or just 4 or 8 pin ) whilst gpu cables tend to be just 8 pin or 6 + 2 pin

thank you so much for your reply.

see both pictures below. If you try to slot the male cable into the female, it doesn't look totally compatable?

Yeah sorry i was wrong! snips thinks that you have it the right way around, just make sure they are correctly stuck together and plugged in :) they should have a little lip on them so you can clip the two together

EDIT useful diagram

EDIT: If the cable you are trying to plug into the motherboard matches the PCIe 8 pin layout on this diagram then no that wont work as i thought you need to plug the cable that is EPS-12V into the motherboard pci wont work in there

EDIT 2: you WILL have a EPS cable on the psu they all have one sometimes it will be a 4pin, this should still work in your 8pin slot. What PSU do you have?

that's what im explaining is that apparently my psu doesn't have an eps-12v? It's a CoolerMaster GX-Lite 500w

Your psu does have a EPS - 12V

From coolermaster website

M / B 24 pins x 1
CPU 4 + 4 pins x 1
PCI-e 6+2 pins x 2
SATA x 6
Peripheral 4 pins x 2
Floppy 4 pins x 1

So yes the 4+4 pin WILL fit in the slot on the motherboard, are you sure the cable is clipped together into a 8 pin. the GPU cables are i said in my op are 6+2

Post a picture of all the PSU connections and we'll be able to tell you which one you need :)

Or just unplug everything and put each one in until the correct one comes up and fits in the hole.

There's no molex wires that would fit in that. the only other one is my 6+2 and 6+2 molex wire but that's for my gtx 970.

Thanks soooo much lads for giving me what i need here :D :D :D :D going to look in the box i got my psu in to check if it has the EPS 12v
