I was going to get a i7-2700k processor , but from the sounds of things ivy bridge is coming out soon, is there likely to be a better processor for similar amounts when the ivy bridge comes out, or when new processors come out are they usually massively over priced ( never bought one close to launch before) and also when the ivy bridge comes out will the sand bridge ones be pretty
much obselete ?
Anyone got anywhere for a comparison at this early stage or is it just speculation still right now or are there facts about performance known, I'd like something about the same performance , I'd be willing to pay a bit more if it would future proof it somewhat

Thanks in advanced

Hi there,

If you need a new system now, then I would just pull the trigger and get a nice Sandy Bridge system.

However, if you can wait then the Ivy Bridge CPUs should offer ~10-20% performance boost per clock compared to sandy bridge, a faster onboard gpu and they use less power.

When Ivy Bridge is released the 3770K will the be CPU equivalent to the 2700K - the 3770K will be a hyperthreaded quad core clocked at 3.5GHz and with an unlocked multiplier. As for pricing the 3770K will be available for a wholesale price of $332, this is the same wholesale price as the i7 2700K currently has.

With new intel CPU releases the prices at launch are not really that inflated -so I wouldn't expect to pay much more than £20 over what the i7 2700K currently sells for, even on launch day.

When Ivy bridge launches then sandy bridge is no longer the king in the performance stakes - but it doesn't mean it will be obsolete - since the performance difference is not going to be massive. The real unknown is how well the ivy bridge chips overclock - hopefully the new 22nm process allows some really nice overclocks.

thanks guys

if they were "released" in march/april, would they come out here at the same time, or would it take longer for stock to arrive in the uk (ie america first) the overclocked 7970's are still hard to get hold of here a month after they came out (even the xfx black edition ones), god knows how long ill be waiting for an asus overclocked one or a gigabyte one with three fans!

anyway if its a case of waiting till march/early april id probably be up for it, longer than that i might have to go for the i7-2700k

The release date is supposed to be some time in April - there are a few sources saying it will be the 8th of April.

As for release in the UK, based on previous Intel CPU releases the retailers will have a decent volume of stock before the release date - so when release date comes they usually have a fair bit of stock to sell immediately.
