CPU running hot?

Under heavy load my CPU tends to reach 77-78 degrees, idling at 36-40. I have reapplied thermal paste for my 212 CM cooler to little effect, I tried to follow Arctic silvers guide to how to apply thermal past to my CPU a thin line down the centre.

Now its possible I have done it wrong again but I wanted to check if you guys thought this was an ok temperature because it seems on the high side to me.

I wasn't sure if there was another issue maybe just with poor airflow through my case or if you guys could just give me advice on how to apply paste?

Did you properly clean off the old paste from the chip and the heatsink? Dusted the radiator grills etc? What CPU is it?

Edit: I see you have a 4790K. Same as me and I was getting the exact same temps before de-lidding - well more like 50c to 95c. It's because of the crappy paste they use between the chip/heatsink instead of it being soldered which causes poor heat transfer. There's not a whole lot you can do outside of de-lidding which has become potentially easier due to a new tool coming to the market.

After a de-lid, I get idles in the mid 20c's and never get above 60c under intense load. I implore you to seriously look into this if it's bothering you as nothing but this is going to sort your problem. 80's in the winter could be closer to 100c in the summer. OCUK forum member "setter" will be able to give you proper advice on this as he did for me at the time I needed it. :)

What programs are you seeing such high temps in, and is the CPU at stock or overclocked? Also, at load what is your vcore voltage at?

My CPU is stock volts and clock. Shampoo I would definitely look at de-lidding in future but for a more immediate change I have just found some Arctic silver paste that I had lying around do you think that would be better than the stuff Cool Master send with their 212s?

Around 80 degrees under load is fine for a CPU and an expected value with typical air cooling dependant on how well ventilated your case is and what other components are present generating heat. Deliding, trying to under volt' the CPU, changing case and or fans or a move to aio/ water are your options for lowering it

If i were the op, id check that the motherboard is on the latest bios revision. Many Z87/97 boards on the first devils canyon bios revisions would overvolt the cpu a fair bit. Seen this on my maximus 6 formula when first using a 4790k.

80 degrees for a stock 4790k is a little on the hot side. The 212 is a decent air cooler for the price, put one on my sisters build ([email protected]) doesnt exeed 60c on p95.

Paste I use gelid extreme, best stuff ive found. But other than that set your voltage to manual and look around for a stock voltage figure on google. Chances are your mobo has overvolted it more than needed.
