CPU runs hot when pushed!

Hi, I need a bit of advice.

Im using a Athlon 64 3700+ CPU that is not overclocked. (2.4ghz)

The problem is when Im running a chess engine that pushes the CPU hard, the PC shuts down sometimes and then reboots itself.

I think this is because the CPU is running hot when pushed hard. I downloaded some softwear to monitor the temperatures, and found that the CPU temperature is reaching around 73C while running the chess engines. The normal CPU running temperature is between 40-45C when the CPU is not pushed hard.

There is a small fan on top of the CPU running at around 2600rpm. And a large fan on the case.

What i want to know is, will this damage my CPU running between 70-75C when its pushed hard? ...as I heard the max temp for my CPU is 70C.

Dont let it run above 60, have you cleaned your case recently? Check that the cpu fan isnt clogged up with dust or that the heatsink isnt full of dust.

Sounds like your heatsink isn't sitting on the chip correctly.

Take it off and put it back on with some Arctic Silver.

Out of curiosity, whats the max temp for a A64? Ive got a 3200 Ven that sits at 38 at idle and max 45 on load, whats the absolute max it should run at?

To me, that sort of temperature means your heatsink is clogged up, or your heatsink isnt seated properly, or your heatsinks fan isnt spinning properly.

Cheers

I agree. My 3700 runs at 46 degrees when on 100% load for extended periods of time.

Running it at 2.4GHz with a zalman 7700, interfaced with AS5.

70 is waaay to hot my friend

60C max if I remember correctly

Could it be a ventilation issue? there isnt much space around my pc, its pretty cosed in were its sitting.

Possibly yes. Well it definitely contributes to the temp being so high. Take the case's side panel off and run it in a well ventilated area and see what happens.

get a can of compressed air and blast the **** out of all your fans and everything else. you can get it at lots of places but it costs a fortune; about £7 normally. but it is very very useful.

and like the other people said, try reseating the heatsink.

if you don't know where to get arctic silver, try a good pc shop, or try ocuk. i'm sure they sell it.

Ok thanks for all the advice.

The first thing im going to try though is moving the pc tomrw to a place with more ventilation room around it, as since ive tested it with my bedroom window wide open its running a little cooler 66C max.If i can get it down to about 55C max just by moving it a little, that will do for now :D

You say that it's at 2.4GHz not overclocked which would mean it's an older socket 754 3700+, right?

1Mb L2 cache and built on 130nm will mean it's going to run a fair bit hotter than the current S939 versions anyway, but as already suggested, it is still too hot and would certainly benefit from some fresh AS5 and a clean heatsink.

My 3700 Claw never ran anywhere near that hot, even when being primed and I doubt a clogged heatsink would cause the temps to reach anywhere near 70C.

Take off the heatsink, clean it out thoroughly and reseat it using Artic Silver heatsink compound

It's very likely that a lot of dust has built up in the heatsink - this is a very effective insulator and it will be the cause of your high temps

Ok, Ive cleaned the fan and moved it to a better ventilated area, and its not going over 65C now. Still hotter than it should be though.

I read somewhere on the net that theres an issue with some of the Clawhammers giving false temp readings untill You do a bios update on some motherboards, anyone know if this is right?

Yes - some motherboards did misread the temperatures of certain CPUs

You can check by carefully placing your hand on the heatsink - at 65C it'll be rather hot. You can also try updating to the latest BIOS

Another thing that makes me think it could be an incorrect reading is the speed which the temperature drops again after the CPU becomes idle again.

It drops from 65C to 42C in a few minutes  , where it takes my mates Athlon 64 3200+ 5 mins to drop from 58C max when pushed to 46C (both now run at under 40C idle).

For that info, I found this very useful
