CPU temp reached 85°C

Somewhere, in a field in cheshire... alright!
Hello

The PC shut off and restarted twice today (watching a DVD) and once yesterday (playing Stalker Clear Sky) so I ran PC Probe II to keep an eye on the temps. At one point the alarm went off and I noticed the CPU temp had reached 85°C (I'm assuming this is too high)

I switched the PC off and left it off a while. I'm back on it now and the temp is at 45°C but I'm a bit worried its going to get high again when its under load.

I'm on an original Intel stock cooler. I was looking at coolers for socket 1366 and I saw a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO CPU Cooler for £22. Would it be worth getting it or should I just take the stock cooler off and clean it, its never been off in five years. Does the problem lie somewhere else?

Thank you for any help.

What clocks, are you Overcooked at all?

Have you tried to remount the cooler, with new/fresh paste?

The hyper 212 will cool much better than the stock heatsink. :)

The TX3 is one step down from the 212 Evo. The 212 is only a few pounds more and well worth it. Alternatively, the Rajintek Themis is good value and just as good as the 212 Evo (I've used both of these).

I've got no experience of the 1366 i7s (I was an AMD guy back then) but 85C is too high and idling at 45C seems a little high too.

No, I'm not overclocked at all. I've only ever used stock coolers. Might go for the Hyper 212. I've not got a massive case, it's quite a big cooler isn't it?

Case is a Lian Li but I can't remember the model. Dimensions are 21cm wide, 49cm length and 44cm high. It must be 10 years old at least. Ran Malwarebytes but it found nothing so that's ok

Looking in the case I don't think the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo will fit. Can anyone recommend me another good cooler for socket 1366 under £30.

In the 5 years it's been installed has it ever been clean out?
Either way an aftermarket heatsink /fan will perform better than the stock one.

.... or should I just take the stock cooler off and clean it, its never been off in five years. ....

Yes. Open up the case and clean it, I wouldn't be surprised to see it clogged up with dirt. Is your fan even working? Consider redoing the thermal paste as well (about 5 to 10 pounds for a small tube, of which you need very little).

Obviously given this is an enthuthiast section, I'd like to suggest you consider upgrading to a better cooler, and one that you could use in another build. The Hyper 212 Evo is a fairly good cooler on a budget, although I would suggest getting a second fan for it.

In the five years the heat sink has never been off but I have vacuumed dust from it best I could. Yes, the fan is working. I think I'll get a new cooler, only ever used stock coolers but have never overclocked. I was looking at the Hyper 212 Evo but I think it'll be too tall to fit in my case. Anything smaller?

You probably have really dried out thermal paste. Either that or it wasn't applied correctly in the first place. Reseat it with new paste.

The heatsink may be all clogged up, even if the fan is spinning and looks clean. 80C is way too high, even under load. Stock cooler should be OK if you're not overlocking.

Careful that the cooler you buy will actually fit and that you have the patience to fit it (they're an absolute pain in the bum to fit, if you don't fit them for a living).

What's a good thermal paste to get to use with a stock cooler?

Is a can of compressed air the best way to clean a heat sink?

Most any of the name brand TIMs are good. it Wash the cooler in hot water and dishwasher machine soap. Slosh it around some, let it soak for awhile, and slosh some more. When it's clean rinse with clear water and shake out as much as you can, then put in a nice warm place to dry. You can use a fan or hair-dryer to dry it too.

My i7 950 @4ghz was running at 93C earlier this summer, I keep it under the stairs which doesnt help.

Clocked it down to 3.8Ghz which let me drop the cpu voltage loads and its now idling around 55C and 75-80C under load with a old artic 13 cooler.

I've always ran pcs hot and silent and never had one die yet.

85 shouldn't kill an 1366 chip, it certainly shouldn't cause the system to shut down because of it either. But yes, do clean out your heatsink, and everything else. :)

In 5 years the thermal paste might not be very effective, reapply that first and clean the heat sink, if that doesn't solve the problem then the hyper 212's are brilliant for the price!

I'm going to replace the thermal paste and put the Intel stock cooler back for now. I've got some Arctic MX-4. It'll be my first attempt at re-applying thermal paste and I'm a bit worried about it. There's so many people saying different things - pea, line, X, to spread or not to spread, that is the question. I've been watching videos on YT and it would appear a lot of people don't know what they're doing. Any tips guys?
