Hi....i'm looking to upgrade,and i'd like a little advice.

I'm currently using a Pentium D 920 2.8ghz presler in a Gigabyte GA-8I945PMF mobo from packard bell,unfortunately it has a locked bios,which prevents me from oc'ing it :(

i was looking to spend around a 100 pounds for a decent 775 mobo,so i could oc it to 3.0ghz,or maybe a little more ;) ... but after a bit of research it seems i could get myself an AMD x2 3.0 ghz cpu and a new AMD mobo for a little bit extra.I know my Pentium D is a bit old,but it runs very cool with a stock fan (18c as i type this) .. so i feel i could squeeze a bit more out of it.

So should i buy a new mobo and oc my Pentium D? or would i be better off getting an AMD X2 and mobo?.. i don't want to spend anymore than 130 to 150 max.

i'm grateful for any advice.Cheers

see if you can flash the bios

although i would just buy new

i would get

Dont even bother looking at the old 65nm Athlons as they offer far less bang for your buck.

Get yourself a AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz £78

Now if your buying this chip & our keen on overclocking you will want a sb710 or sb750 to unlock the possible other cores & achieve the best clocks.

Now a quick guess & a google tells me your current mobo is matx so theres no point in looking at a standard atx mobos as you will need a new case.

Thus theres only one real mobo for the job GA-MA78GM-US2H It most be this exact model as all the other versions have the SB700

For some strange reason there not in stock hint hint but can be had for £60/70

Another consideration should be going standard ATX aka buying a new case.

In this case go for this mobo This offers you more fetures such as the SB 750 & crossfire support. You will of course need a new case & my recommendation for that would be this.

This route may work out better in the long run as it will give you more flexabilty, upgrade abilty & better cooling allowing you to OC higher

Thanks for the replies :)

@ jak731 ....I would attempt a Bios flash,but i'm not really sure how tbh.

@ PwnDirect ....I should have said before,i have it running in an ATX case already,so i wouldn't need to purchase a new case.. i'm using 4gigs of Crucial DDR2 ram aswell.

So i guess i should forget about oc'ing my Pentium D and just get a new Cpu?

That AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 550 3.10GHz does seem like a good deal.
