CPU upgrade?

Hello, i'm currently using a Intel Pentium G620 2.60GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail. With a 650TI boost 2gb graphics card, and 8GB RAM. I've been noticing a lot of stuttering and in-game lag recently while playing TERA, Vindictus, AC4.

I wasn't sure if my CPU isn't up for these titles, and would need to upgrade or not? I'm interested in an i5, but unsure if it'll actually give me a large boost to my gaming. Is it possibly my Hard drive which is causing the stuttering? I'm using a very old hard drive which was in my computer from years ago. I'm not planning on overclocking.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Do you have a Z68 motherboard? I'd suggest getting a new CPU to be honest. (Maybe a 3570k and a you could have a go bit of an overclock if you have a Z68 board).

Dual core really doesn't cut it in modern titles.

MSI H61M-P31-W8 Intel H61 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard

I don't plan on overclocking though. My budget is around £180.

Thanks for the replies.

Just wondering why a i5 3470 over a 3570k? I was originally planning on getting that instead. Is there any reason to go for a 3470 instead?

Also will upgrading to an i5 smoothen out my frame rates, and stutters? As this is a major problem with my gaming recently.

Is it necessary to update my BIOS to use Ivybridge? My most recent version is from 01/18/2012 v2.3. Or still would need to be? I also don't have a floppy drive, is it safe to update it using MSI live update 5? Sorry for all the questions, i'm a little clueless about updating the BIOS.

Do not use any windows bios flashing software. Download the latest bios to a usb stick and use the flashing tool in the bios. If your board does not have a flashing tool in the bios sign up to MSI's forums and get the official bios flashing tool from them. Even MSI say do not use live update to flash the bios.

Actually with MSI I would do that in reverse. There are problems with the inbuilt flash program on the board. I updated mine using Windows (using their app) and then wanted to go back as I found the Ivybridge bios worse than the one I was using. I used Mflash or whatever it's called and it crashed half way through and bricked my board.

I used the Mflash on my Mpower last week, Clutched at straws and it just updated with no problems, but I have seen a lot of people suggesting not to use it, so use it at your own risk I suppose.

My mobo has dual Bios so I just ran the risk of using it ( just make sure to make a backup of your current bios)

I have c2d e7400 that is close to needing replacing. Although I have it running at 3.8ghz it was getting rather stuttery in games such as skyrim and shogun 2 total war. I replaced my main drive with an ssd and the difference was very impressive. Much less to nothing in terms of in game stuttering and day to day operations and booting much faster.

I would reccommend going down this route first as old hard drives are not reliable and not quick. If that doesnt solve much at least you have a new faster hard drive.

I updated the BIOS today successfully without any problems using M-flash. I'll have to see how the new processor works out before I replace the hard drive, but it's definitely something i'll need very soon. Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated.
