CPU vs GPU

he doesnt need the os adding, i added it to show the total price if he got the os for £45 and a hdd for £35...

also please tell me how 450w is underpowered for this build? there is no ask of xfire, 450w allows for overclocking too, ive built a similar rig with a 560ti and a 4.5Ghz oc on a 450w, it is fine.

The Lepa W Series only has 360W on the 12 rail which is where virtually all the power is drawn from in a modern system.

It's not enough, especially if overclocking.

You can't overclock the i3-2100 anyway but the GPU could be overclocked.

Having an i5-2500K and overclocking it would be even worse on that PSU.

AMD can't compete with intel ATM, they've really dropped the ball with bulldozer, I'd go with the i3 + 6950 build above but drop the aftermarket cooler n up the PSU a bit

just so you know, those PSU calculators are pretty pants. they once recommended a 750W PSU for SLI 480s

since your students you should check if your school/uni is registered to the MSDN academic alliance. if it is then you should be able to get win7 professional for free. if not then it'll be ~£40 as your students

since the HP PC is very old could you take a look inside it and see if the hard drive is SATA (small flat cable) or IDE (massive ribbon cable). if it is IDE then you'll either need a new HDD, or need to get an IDE card (~£10)
same goes for the DVD drive

stulid, why arent you recommending the MSI GD43 motherboard?
ive checked and the MSI has the same number of SATA 6 and 3 Gb/s ports, the same number of USB3 ports, plenty of USB2, and crucially, proper SLI/crossfire support along with PCIe gen3 compatability

its a touch cheaper too :)
(for anyone that doesnt know, you get the VAT taken off the price of some MSI motherboards, this being one of them)

i'd have to see some proper horror stories about the quality to put me off of it tbh, which there shouldnt be since MSI have a 3 year warranty going for it
