CPU vs GPU

stulid, why arent you recommending the MSI GD43 motherboard?
ive checked and the MSI has the same number of SATA 6 and 3 Gb/s ports, the same number of USB3 ports, plenty of USB2, and crucially, proper SLI/crossfire support along with PCIe gen3 compatability

its a touch cheaper too :)
(for anyone that doesnt know, you get the VAT taken off the price of some MSI motherboards, this being one of them)

i'd have to see some proper horror stories about the quality to put me off of it tbh, which there shouldnt be since MSI have a 3 year warranty going for it

the g43 g3 doesn't support sli and with the 2nd pcie only x4 the xfire has the same issue as z68ap-d3. think you're confused with the g45 g3

Because there is proof in the gigabytes abilities,
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18335129

and did you know its Gen3 comaptible also?

when you say gen3 compatable is this the gigabyte 'we havent changed the chips, but the first x16 slot is gen3 compatable' or is it proper gen3 compatable like the MSIs?

however, i see your point on the proven product. is there actually a review of the GD43 out there anywhere?

It was in the mag CustomPC, I did read it while shopping in ASDA, they use one of those Chroma testers like good review sites should.

That's a bit **** if it's not a badging error. Shame I can't find any review's, which is why I tended not to recommend BeQuiet in the past (and they were priced higher than their direct competitors)

Ok stick to Seasonic via XFX, 528 W +12V. I know this is correct. :D
The 450 W (408 W +12V)would also be ok, but isn't in stock. :/

nope:

unless they got confused as well, which is quite possible as they have got the USBs wrong for some other motherboard

if im honest i was kinda surprised when it said there was SLI/crossfire support at x8/x8 because i didnt think it did before looking it up there

*edit*
oh for sod sake, they did get it wrong. just checked the MSI website and it says x4 for the second slot

also, nice spot there stulid. go ahead with the gigabyte one :)

lets try out the new smiley I learnt :p
and no I didn't cheat by clicking on the smiley in the box on the right.

oh and on the subject of the x4 xfire, will there be a big performance loss if I was to use my 6950 toxics on the z68ap-d3 compared to say on the z68xp-ud3 while I try to get the extreme7 sorted out? if there isn't a huge difference may just flog the extreme7 as faulty and then buy a new mobo once the ivybridge is out/I get a job so as to be able to buy a nice shiney new motherboard.

8X is the minimum for me, cant remember where I seen it tested but there is a slight drop going from 8X-4X on the second card (16X/4X crosssfire), its the going from 8X-16X and visa versa thats currently isn't worth worrying about.

This video isnt accurate as he has a 6990, but it gives an idea - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfXALgE7mVM&feature=player_embedded#!

Thanks the ud3(ud3p worth the extra?) it is then if I can't sort out the extreme7, was thinking p8z68-v or -v pro not sure.

since your students you should check if your school/uni is registered to the MSDN academic alliance. if it is then you should be able to get win7 professional for free. if not then it'll be ~£40 as your students

since the HP PC is very old could you take a look inside it and see if the hard drive is SATA (small flat cable) or IDE (massive ribbon cable). if it is IDE then you'll either need a new HDD, or need to get an IDE card (~£10)
same goes for the DVD drive

Yeah, our school is on the list at the site, but when I tried accessing it, it wouldn't let me. Something about my account details not being there? I guess I need to find out from my school. Anyone here done it and know what to do?

The HP isn't old, he only got it this summer so it's new, it's got a 750GB drive. He said he wanted at least a 500GB drive in the new one, I suggested he just use the old one for now and either not use the old HP at all, or get a smaller cheaper drive for that PC.

Actually, using the old HP drive, would he be able to use the Win7 that's installed on there? I know it's locked to the HP mobo but can he use the recovery partition to do a fresh install on the new mobo? It'd probably come with all the HP crap installed though.

Why are there no HDD's in Danewesleys builds?

Edit, ah Just read why.

Hi stulid. What's your opinion - i3 with better GPU, or i5 and worse GPU? With the idea of possibly upgrading in a year or so anyway. Thanks.
