cracked screen on iphone

I'm not 100% sure that these cheap £10 screens are of the same quality as Apple. You can also get it slightly out and once the sticky stuff grabs hold it isn't letting go. If it's not on 100% then the home button can sometimes stick. It's a cheap fix, not easy and your phone will never been as good as it once was.

Each to their own, but done properly and carefully the phone is every bit as good as it was. The cheap digitisers are fine, you can't tell the difference from a genuine Apple item. I suppose they may not be as scratch resistant, but I've seen no evidence of that. I've never had any complaints about the ones I've done :)

I assume you've tried a hard reset? Is it being detected in iTunes?

Yes. It's stuck in the black screen recovery mode. iTunes detects its there, but it doesn't know anything about the device. Doesn't display the serial number or size of the device.

It fails doing a restore at the very very end of the validation process with error "6", but I can't find anything on the net that has helped.

That's a strange one, I've had one showing similar symptoms, but it was fine after forcing it into DFU mode and doing a restore.

Yeah I can't seem to force it into DFU mode. Screen only comes on once you start doing a restore. Any ideas how I can force DFU?

EDIT: I think it may be stuck in DFU. I can't use iRecovery to access the phone. Only thing that picks it up are iTunes and iFuntastic, but neither can tell me anything about the phone. :(

IPhone 3G. I'd quite like to get it fixed if I can, but I guess the apple genii wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, even if I was willing to!

You lot realise that apple will just swap it out for a new one for £120 or so? My o/h had a similar cracked screen to that, along with a crack appearing up the back from the dock connector.

£120 later, new phone via applecare? Seems preferable to playing around with it yourself.

Even iPhone 3G's? Not likely. Using the assembly kit is a doddle. Two screws and three cables. Easier than replacing the ram in my macbook.

Soul.Survivor, thats a very kind offer thank you very much. I live in the Sale area of Manchester (when I am there). Have you any ideas as to what you think it might be, though?

Yes, although prices seem to have risen very slightly;

iPhone 4 Out-of-Warranty Service
16GB & 32GB £ 146.29
iPhone 3GS Out-of-Warranty Service
8GB, 16GB & 32GB £ 146.29
iPhone 3G Out-of-Warranty Service
8GB & 16GB £ 146.29
Original iPhone Out-of-Warranty Service
8GB & 16GB £ 146.29

IMO that is a far preferable way of dealing with the issue. They just swap it for a totally brand new looking one (if not brand new, my o/h's was new).

Hmmm, not worth if if you have only broken the screen. £40 is far better than £140. If you have a fried phone like mine though... Are any stipulations on that Out-of-warrenty service? I've already changed the glass once. But have put a brand new oem screen in now, so you can't really tell.

Drop me a message through trust and I'll try help out. Thanks :)

I've replaced a few of these and to be honest I'd get a whole assembly rather than just replace the glass/digitiser in future. The new screens don't fit as well no matter what anyone says, often the rubber gasket fails while removing and my 3G had the replacement digitiser fail after a few months, only the top of the screen would recognise touch. Also I've always had dust problems during the life of the phone after replacing just the glass/digitiser. You can get a whole replacement screen assembly for about £50.

I've never had any issues with them not fitting well, the digitisers I use fit just as well as original Apple items. I'd post a picture of my own phone which has one fitted, but you'd have to take my word for it that it is not an original Apple digitiser.

often the rubber gasket fails while removing

Only if you are heavy handed and using pry tools, if you use a sucker and are careful the gasket is fine 99% of the time.

Clearly a faulty unit then, I've never experienced this.

Again, depends on how careful you are during re-assembly. If you are careful and have an undamaged gasket there is no reason you should suffer from issues with dust.

Fair enough, but for me the small extra work is well worth a saving of £40+ :)

My iphone 3g screen cracked today :( It's only the bottom part of it though to the side of the home button and not across the screen so is it worth bothering to replace?

Also will the glass be able to come out and cut me ? :O

If it were mine I'd do it, but that's because I can do them in minutes ;)

Unless you feel confident it's probably not worth doing if it doesn't bother you that much. They are bonded down quite well so it shouldn't come out and cut you or anything.

Im semi competant with intricate things, although a bit busy atm and dont want to make the problem worse so I think I might leave it. Plus if I crack my screen again it saves doing it twice :p (ever the optimist :p)

Whilst on the topic of opening iPhones:

A friend just purchased a used 3g and its in excellent condition except the top left corner glass is slightly raised and when pushed it flexes down. All the other corners feel solid when you push them but this corner moves down.

Those who have opened their phones:

Do you think there are any easy fixes for this? ie clips that could have worked loose. We really don't want to have to send this phone back to the seller but not happy with the flexing screen.

Thanks

Is it just the glass itself that is flexing? If so the previous owner has probably replaced it at some point and didn't stick it down correctly. There are no 'clips' on the glass itself, it simply sticks to the plastic frame underneath it. Only real fix for that would be to disassemble it, remove the old stickers/glue and apply new ones (you can buy the correctly shaped sticky pads from ebay for a couple of quid, make sure you use 3M ones though).

Alternatively you could try gently heating it with a hair-dryer and pushing down on it, it may help it bond again.

Looking at it its possibly the whole front bit in the corner flexing (the entire front portion, black plastic + glass) flexes down into the case. Would you have any other suggestions if this were the case?

How does the front piece of the phone attach in the top corners?

Thanks!
