Crazy jump in day meter reading all of a sudden?!

Just submitted my quarterly meter reading after I suspected they did a bad job.

Last quarter used 31kWh in the day and 1067. kWh in the night
This quarter 1129. kWh in the day and 332. kWh night

What's crazy is we should've used less since we're never home during the day atm and we do pretty much everything in the night.

Edit: also we haven't had the storage heaters on this qtr makes it even weirder.

Has anyone had the same issue since my day rate it's stupid high at 21.83p?

Few questions OP.

1) Is it a mechanical style meter or one with a digitial display
2) Whats the first 4 numbers/letters of your meter serial number
3) Your posted that you think the rates are recording in reverse eg night in day and day in night. have you taken spaced readings at different times of the day?

Cool unrelated story but,

When i first moved in with my GF we had a tiny little studio apartment. The electric bill was fantastically low i thought.
We lived there for about a year in total the bill rarely changing month to month, even after we were away nearly a whole month in England, that seemed very odd.
We queried the bill with the electric company and they came round to test the meter. Long story short it turned out they had miswired the the meters a few years back and we were technically paying the bill of some old woman living on her own... They couldn't even be sure who was paying ours :P in a building of 8 people.... Very Professional....

Digital multirate meter and D012.

Yep took readings at 12:30am, 5:30am, 7:30am, 9am, 1pm

Thats not really the energy companies fault.... its the muppet contractor who wired up the building

Generally speaking youll prob be on SSC 0151 or 0244 which means your night rate is approx 12am-7am. What were the readings you took for the above times?

Also D012 is not a prefix im familiar with D12W or something is more common. You can generally tell whose meter it is and the year of manufacture from the first 4(5) letters and numbers. SMART meters have a different prefix and so do pay as you go meters but generally speaking the format should be something like D12W or E16UP etc. Some meters have quirks with common issues.

Have you changed supplier recently?

12:31
Rate 1 - 39272
Rate 2 - 34364

07:08
Rate 1 - 39274
Rate 2 - 34364

On the meter and as logged on my account Rate 2 = Night/Low

At 13:15
Rate 1 - 39274
Rate 2 - 34370

12:31
Rate 1 - 39272
Rate 2 - 34364

Based on those it would suggest the night is R1 and the Day is R2. Unless its an AMR or Smart meter the supplier wont be able to "flip" the recording on the meter.
So one of a few things has happened

1) The readings have been transposed for some time
2) The timeswitch is borked for the Day/night flip but generally speaking it doesnt just flip which rates record when. When it breaks it just slams all the usage on one rate

Side note its not uncommon for the label on the meter re the switching to be wrong and for the supplier to have this set up as transposed and recording the wrong reading against the wrong rate. I would always go with the results of the spaced readings as to what the correct orientation is

Yep, however SSE have been taking rate 1 as day and r2 as night. The figures below are taken by themselves, I really hope this doesn't mess up my billing completely.

What I did notice is that 6 units were used by 1:15 which is strange as I was asleep (couldn't sleep in night bad toothache) and nothing was on as my partner was with the baby and everything has been off. I only used 2 in the night when i had the computer running, ran the hot water heater to make sure i could get a clear indication on what was being used.

Edit: the figures were mine the figures they took on 9th to base the bill on are: R1 39240 - R2 34355

How long have you been with SSE? And based on what you've provided so far it does suggest if they are recording night usage on the day rate. Over the space of 24 hours whats the daily usage for both rates?

You say 6 units were used by 1:15am? based on what readings and taken when?

Not long since December. From the 7am reading to 1:15. I only used 2 units the whole night being awake with gadgets on deliberately to get good readings, We had nothing on at all from 8-1.

Not tried taking daily useage yet will do today and see.

If mine was certified in 2006 wouldn't that pass the 10 years ceritifcation?

So I should have a good case for my meter to be tested and replaced and perhaps a adjustment of charges?

Interesting, apparently the current rate (the smaller 1 or 2) should flash to indicate which rate is presently being applied. I'm assuming the two totals are displayed one after the other automatically as there's no user button to scroll through the display yourself?
