Having bought a new computer I now have 2 both of which i need to be networked toogether so I can use both for rendering 3d scenes. How do you go about it, do you connect one computer to another using an ethernet cable or do you connect both to the router?

Thanks

I suppose the second one doesn't have to but would be nice if it did. That mean connect to the router I presume?

Are you talking about trying to have both machines render separate parts of the same scene in some sort of mini cluster? I'm no expert but that's something which is going to need to be supported by the rendering software itself, it's not something which will magically happen simply by wiring the two machines together.

Yeah, just connect them both to the router, I would imagine the router will hand out a DHCP address and as long as both of the PC have the Network Interfaces set to obtain an IP address automatically then it should just work ;) (in the Network sense) no idea about the rendering software!

Yeah theres no problem on the rendering front as I've set up distributed rendering on vray a few times, it's just that when I was employed the networks were already all set up so that's the part I don't know.

Thanks guys

Sounds like you've got the difficult bit covered then. Is there anything in particular you need to know about the machines (IP addresses etc) to set up the distributed rendering? That might affect how you need to set up the router.

Just them all on the same network so they can share files and then an ip address for each computer but in my case that's only one extra computer.

Router will work but would suggest a nice little Gigabit switch into which both PCs and the Router can connect, will speed up file transfers nicely assuming both PCs have Gigabit network interfaces.

At the moment just trying to work with what #I have but worth bearing in mind.

Not having a great deal of joy.

I have them both seeing each other in the sense that both are displayed in the network, and both are in a homegroup. The problem is that its very choosy in what it allows you to see in the other computer, which just seems to be:

Documents
Music
Pictues
Video

What I was after was beeing ble to see all the hdd's in the other computer and move files for example. Am i doing this the wrong way?
