Cricket World Cup thread

Its not right that we have players learning how to play cricket at international level. We've gone through this with Mahmood and it has been an absolute disaster for the team. Panesar isn't going to be as bad for the team as Mahmood, that would be a gross exaggeration because as you say he is economical, but he doesn't have that wicket taking ability that other specialist bowlers have and there is no precedent for him taking one day wickets. The question I ask myself is whether having a specialist seamer in the squad in place of Panesar would serve us better.

Like who? Plunkett isn't much better than Mahmood when it's not his day. That's the problem with our bowling atm. Both Mahmood and Plunkett can be brilliant from time to time, but mostly bowl pretty poorly. Monty is at least consistently economical which is as useful as taking wickets in the one day game.

Looks like Shoaib Malik has been made the new Pakistan captain.

BBC Sport said:
Former skipper Imran Khan, who led the team to World Cup glory in 1992, backed Malik for the role earlier this week.

"He appears to have a good cricket brain and could turn out to be a very good choice for Pakistan cricket," Imran said.

I bloody well hope so.

So Fletchers gone.

But who to replace him?

What about Graham Gooch. Done very good things at Essex..

Fitness freak, not a coach.

Dav Whatmore (finally). The obvious candidate is Moores, but promoting from within in this situation makes it hard to break out of complacency.

Looking like Moores is the favorite for the job. Now to see if Vaughan stays as captain.

Few possible playing candidates playing in the first county games.

Cook followed up his 140 odd for the MCC with another century today, showing some good early season form.

Geraint Jones got a great 2, surely can't be considered anymore, especially with his best mate Fletcher gone.

SM Davies only got 14 in a poor Worcester innings. Harmison got 3 wickets against them.

Shah nearly got a double century with 193.

Tresscothick was back with with a 70.

Never heard of this one before but Godleman got 113no. Played 3 innings before this one and got 3 fifty's so seems to be liking county cricket.

And last but not least young leg spinner Rashid did well with the bat getting 86 with a couple of 6's in there so looks like he has a shot or two. Followed up by picking up 4 of the 5 wickets Surrey have lost in reply.

Hopefully they'll keep Vaughan as test captain but drop him from the one day team. Still think he has a lot to offer test wise, but one day has never been his game.

Lara's just announced his retirement from International cricket, rather than just One day games. Gonna miss the test series here then, bit of a shame.

Yep just read this last night, dunno what to think of his promotion...im hoping perhaps he can get Pak cricket to what it was before ie back to winning ways...but theres a danger that the senior players might try to undermine his authority...Question is now, who will be Pak coach??...how about Duncan Fletcher??:p:D.

Sad day that Lara decided to call it a day from all forms of cricket, was hoping he would continue with the Test side of cricket. But im sure in the past hes retired and come back...so who knows...i have a feeling hes throwing his toys out of the pram as he tends to make rash decisions and thinks/feels he is above the game. But all the same its a shame hes called it a day.

Works with the ECB accademy doesnt he?

Dunno mate, never heard of him other than him winning the county champs with Sussex...thats about all i know of him. Hope he does a good job though, not gonna be easy with the english media as well.

Yeah he worked with the academy, very highly rated so hopefully will do a good job. Let's not be too harsh on Fletcher, he did very well up until about 18months ago when it all started to go a bit pear shaped. Hindsight suggests he probably should have gone out while he was ahead after the ashes.

Just seen Watson for Australia hit about 24 off the previous over, they really are brutal towards the end of an innings.

Aus now 331 with one over remaining. The ease with which they seem to pass 300 these days is quite worrying.

edit:

17 runs off the last over taking Aus to 348-6.
50 odd runs from the last 3 overs, or something crazy like that.

Just checking Australia's run through the world cup so far...

Aus 334 vs Sco
Aus 358 vs Net
Aus 377 vs SA

Aus 322 vs WI
Aus 106-0 (chasing 104) vs Ban [done in 13.5 overs]
Aus 248-3 (chasing 247) vs Eng [done in 47.2 overs]
Aus 92-1 (chasing 91) vs Ire [done in 12.2 overs]
Aus 232-3 (chasing 226) vs SL [done in 42.4 overs]
Aus 348 vs NZ

So, looks like the only time Aus aren't going to get 300+ is when they bat second and are chasing a lower score. They have taken cricket to different level, quite simply an amazing team.

complete opposite to england who just stayed still. They take huge advantage of the powerplays which most of the time puts them immediately on top in a game, then also have the players to hit at the end when they can. They're in another league. Some teams can pull off the odd high score but they do it so often.

Aussies looking absolutely brutal at the moment, they have literally beaten every team they have faced in this WC into the ground. Personally i dont think anyone will stop them from winning another WC tbh..although a few people are saying that they are due a loss but at this rate, i dont think the Kiwi's, Saffa's or the Sri Lankans can match them...perhaps Sri Lanka at full strength but even then i think the Aussies would still beat them hands down.

Awesome performance by the Aussies.
