Crossfire GPU's only getting 40-60% Usage on certain games?

This is similar to what I am getting with xfire 7970's on an i7 920@4ghz. Performance on 2 gpu's in most games is similar to with a single card.

What seems to happen is for example, say on a game on single card I am getting 95% usage, when I enable xfire and run same game I will still only be getting a total of 95% usage but split between the 2 cards - ie 48% on card 1 and 47% on card 2. Does that sound like the symptoms of a cpu bottleneck?

I've got a z87 and 4770k sitting here ready to build new system in any case, so I'm hopeful this will solve it. Just waiting to get a bit spare time as need to drain out my watercooling loop etc so quite time consuming.

Exactly what I am getting, sometimes I get GPU1 at 50% and GPU2 at 50%, very strange. There definitely is bottlenecking going on but should it be doing it to this extent?

Tom

Try a fresh install of Windows, use the 8.1 preview that's about, install the latest AMD beta drivers.

I'd try that before blasting money into an i7.

Five.Stars will likely be formatting I assume, so if he's got any driver problems, that'll be removed, he's more bottlenecked than you are in the majority of games, but even 50/50's still a little low.

Can't use Windows 8.1 as I do not have Windows 8 to start with. I am currently using Windows 7. Wouldn't Re-installing Windows delete everything?

Tom

it depends on the game

single threaded you should be fine, multithreaded games you will struggle on with sli/xfire

I would look for a second hand 2600k/2700k or 3770k,pci-e3 is only 1% so you won't lose much if you went sb

theres swings and roundabouts with oc'ing,sb soldered/ivy paste but generally the 3770k's tend to be better clockers than the 3570's

What do you mean by SB?

Tom

I just bought a 2600K a couple of days ago, could maybe do some benches vs my 2500K. Although I bought it (2500K) off Matt so he might have his old results still hanging around.

Cool! What are your specs alongside the 2600K?
Seeing them on Ebay for around £40 with 4 days left so keeping an eye out! ;)

Tom

Your motherboard only supports x16 x4 crossfire. I'd stick with ivybridge so you can at least use pci-e 3.0 x4 which = pci-e 2.0 x8.

Ahh very good point Matt, good call!
What do you reckon on doing a fresh windows install, a lot of hassle isn't it?
Could always just fit the i7 and if I have problems then on, re-install windows.

Tom

I followed a guide whilst building and installing OS so I can't say I know somewhere I went wrong. Brother was playing Zombie Panic Source earlier and this runs on the Half Life 2 Engine and was only getting 20-30% usage on both GPU's?!?
I also got a couple of Driver Crashes earlier where the screen goes blank for a minute and comes back on.

Tom

The thing is, your gpu's will rarely hit maximum usage, apart from when you're benching. It'll work hard enough for the settings you've select. You've probably got vsync on to, which means it'll only push to 60fps (depending on your monitor).

See what you are saying, I play pretty much all my games with V-Sync off. Some games get higher usage than others, normally more when they are more demanding.

Tom

Things can go wrong over time, it's more likely to be drivers than anything else, that the driver crashes to me signify that.

Might it be worth using Driver Fusion and deleting all CCC Drivers and re-installing as I did not do that when I fitted my new GPU?
Fitted my GPU without doing anything before, got onto the desktop and it automatically enabled CrossfireX.

Tom

Even Driver fusion never helped me when I had serious problems.
You can give it a whack.
I'd install Driver fusion, turn off your internet (To prevent it downloading drivers)
Uninstall drivers, restart, then driver fusion, restart, then install fresh 13.10.
Then connect back on the internet.

I'd still always go for the fresh Windows install before splashing money though, but that's just me.

What was the problem you had?

Tom

Don't know if this is different because it is not in-game it is a benchmark but I am getting a constant 80-98% Usage in Unigine Valley.

Tom

Unigine are ridiculously GPU limited.
I'm surprised it dips to 80.

A Pentium can pretty much max out a Titan on Unigine.

Ummm, strange!
But like Matt said earlier I should still see a performance increase even though I am using an i5 but currently I am seeing pretty much nil to little performance increase. I will try to uninstall and re-install drivers later on because something is not right here.

Tom

xTommy run a comparison. Here's what i scored with my 7950's @ stock 925/1250. Use the extreme HD preset in Unigine Valley and post your benchmark score.

E6PA9dA.jpg

Right just ran Valley at 925/1250, so the same clocks as you Matt and achieved:

GPU1: 93%
GPU2: 97%
FPS: 71.4
Score: 2987

Tom

Looks about right with your cpu clocked slightly slower. :)

Maybe your x16 x4 setup is not optimal.

Did not want to buy a new Motherboard just for a new GPU so wanted to try it with this, honestly thought that x4 (PCI_E 2.0 x8) would be fine, just a little less performance.
Surely the Motherboard is not causing this problem?

Tom

Good to know, thankyou!
Had a little go on Tomb Raider, I am getting 99% usage on both cards until I hit areas of intense fighting and the usage on both cards drop to 50-60%. It should be the other way round. 99% @ 150-180fps to 50-60% @ 75-90fps?

Tom

Haha, getting even more complicated now!
Sorry for going on but paying for an extra GPU, I am wanting to get the performance out of it. Even if that means a new Mobo and/or i7 so be it but for the moment I am just wanting to see how it can perform maximally on a i5 and Z77-D3H.
