Crossfire overheating :(

That looks so messy.

Decent case & setup is so worth it.

I was thinking this earlier.. actually my thoughts were.. I want USB3.0 and SATA3, more space for my graphics cards and a northbridge which isn't so hot.

Then.. I saw the new 2011 chips, and though if i'm going to get a new motherboard... might aswell...
Then would need new memory...
And the new SSD to utilise the SATA...
Then it's a new PC :S.

So.. I think I could perhaps just buy a larger ATX board rather than my micro MSI X58M, and sell my board

Yeah, they are expensive at the moment but the thing I worry about is the new CPUs coming out for that socket and not for the 1366. I guess that if I was going to buy one anyway, i'd wait a while, and it would be almost a full new PC, so I would be better getting the most out of my current setup by buying a new motherboard for my current setup.
It would mean I get USB3 and SATA3 also which seem like they will be good benefits, as well as the spacing between the graphics cards.

Is there a 1366 board you would highly recommend over others?
I need it to be able to handle 6 triple channel memory, and crossfire, USB3 and SATA3, and that's probably all. It would be nice if it's a good overclocking board, but not essential.

If I do that, perhaps I can stick with my case and just rebuild it a whole lot neater than it it currently ( The larger board will no doubt help with that too )

If you're going to go through all that hassle, couldn't you just get a 580GTX instead?

I could, and I think I should have originally, but... if I do that now then I miss out on SATA3 and USB3 also, so I think I'm going to be looking at a new motherboard at the very least...

Not that I have anything USB3 or SATA 3 yet, but looking at those SSDs makes me want to get in on the new sata.

Sadly, my cards are also still running at different activity levels, I'm now double guessing my PSU.

This is nuts :(.

I know a new motherboard probs won't fix that but will help towards heat, as will a new case, and allow a new SSD etc etc, but I really just want to fix my graphics first.

I'm thinking it could be the PSU now... is 650W enough to power this rig, I wonder where / how I can test that.

http://educations.newegg.com/tool/psucalc/index.html

This site says I need ~770w ( the memory didn't go high enough on the site, and it doesn't have SSDs so I put them in at 10k RPM drives, but I assume an SSD is less )

http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine this says 547w... hmm?

Any ideas? Is it worth buying a new PSU anyway for future, and as I can get a modular one instead of having cables all over...? It would have to be corsair for me, which means it will cost a fair bit, but of the hundreds of corsair products i've purchased over the years, i've never had an issue with ANY of them ( apart from the corsair voyageur flash drive, which lasted me around 5 years before dying ).

The message in the system viewer from when my PC restarted, is:
"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
This happened 3 times in one day, and hasn't happened since I cleaned the PC out a lot, although I haven't played much since either ( damn coursework )
It didn't seem to show a BSOD, even though the cards were running crazy hot, could this be the PSU?

I asked AMD about this issue, here is the reply:

Dear Stephen,

Your service request : SR #{ticketno:[xxxxx]} has been reviewed and updated.

Response and Service Request History:

Please ensure that you are using the latest 11.11c performance driver.

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Catalyst1111cperformance.aspx

How the technology works is the cards do not split the load, the second card kicks in when the first card is struggling.

Please also ensure to un-install before re-installing.

In order to update this service request, please respond, leaving the service request reference intact.

Best regards,

That is certainly not my understanding of how crossfire works!
