Crossfire

I'm going to try a complete re-install at some point in the next few days (something mindless to do during the inevitable boxing day hangover/slump perhaps?) and see if this helps. I'm hoping it's a driver conflict or maybe even, god forbid, and error on my behalf when I was setting them up.

a clean reinstall is a good idea i think , as when i swapped from my 8800 GTX to a single 4870 performance wasnt really noticed untill i reinstalled good luck

Does anyone have links to a good guide for setting up crossfire?

A few minutes googling and checking on the ATI site just lead me to guides for the 1xxx series which were crossfired using some weird looking dual connector DVI cable thingy.

Do I just install one card with 8.12 as usual then add the second card and bridge so CCC autodetects, then tick enable crossfire?

You don't need a guide. You plug both cards in, install drivers and then Crossfire can be activated through CCC. It's weird I haven't experienced any of the problems you have had with my 4870X2. I actually think Crossfire is a hell of a lot better than SLI and I've had vast experience of both.

Granted I am last generation, but I have to say with a 3850 and a 3870xt running Crossfire I am yet to experience any issues. Game at 1680x1050 and most things will play at full everything or full everything with a little bit of AA.

Over the year performance boosts have been pretty consistant and 8.12's have been phenominal. overall i must say its been very smooth sailing.

Like Brad and the others above i saw a huge gain from Xfire. It could be possible that you had a botched install or that your CPU etc is holding you back.

Do you guys have both crossfire connectors connected or just the one?

My sapphire card didnt come with one (I have been in touch with sapphire to get hold of one) so I only have a single bridge. I'm clutching at straws here as surely if running tri crossfire then only on bridge would be connected then too.

I had no problems using my 4850 and 4870 in crossfire, great gains and did not notice any microstutter.

And you only need 1 bridge, you're correct in thinking the other bridge is for tri-cf.

Does anyone esle have the fan control issues? I can only seem to control the fan speed of whichever card is in the top slot, the bottom card seems to be stuck at what sounds like 50% no matter what I do.

Oh and currently re-installing vista now, fingers crossed.

As it stands now I'm thinking of selling the 2 cards (they're going for about £150 on a popular auction site) and putting the money towards either a GTX280/285 or a 4870x2 sometime early next year.

I'd love to hear from anyone who is using the x2 now so I could figure out if they still suffer from the issues I outlined in the original post.

I've also realised that this thread is rather inflammatory so I'm sorry for that. I don't intend to start an ATI/nVidia fight.

Running a 4870x2 at 1900x1200, absolutely no problems here, love it! :D

You have to drop down the little tab dont you and set the other card up?

Cheers for that, I think it must have been a botched install/driver conflict as that didn't show up until just now after doing a full system reinstall.

I have to say that initial impressions with this fresh install are very positive.

I've only re-installed far cry 2 so far as it was a game that caused a lot of issues and I'm amazed by how much better it is running. All maxed out settings 4x AA, and fraps is reading that I'm nearly always at the 60fps cap dropping to about 57 during hectic scenes (oh no!).

Off to do last minute Xmas shopping now then to try more games tonight.

That sounds spot on.
