CRT recommendation

lol does make me laugh when people go on about space saving
and they don't use or need the space just a big void left on top of their desks.
That's not really an advantage when games look twice as good on a crt.

Actually that, and the fact that my desk was really breaking up under the weight of my Mitsubishi 22" CRT, was the primary reason for me to change to a TFT. It wasn't so much the width that the CRT took up that was the problem but the depth, as it was almost cube like in shape.
I have very limited room for my rig and the TFT allows the desk to be put back at the edge of the wall.
I must say though that even though I'm happy with my 19" TFT I do miss the versatility and quality of a good CRT screen.

Diamondtron and Trinitron just have a very good reputation that's all. I'm no expert though, it's just things I've heard. The only diamondtron screen I've owned was a Viewsonic P97f+SB which was a very nice monitor, and had the same NEC tube as the 930SB which is regarded as one of the best 19" screens. Most people say the Sony Trinitron tubes are even better though.

Iiyama used to be up there with NEC/Sony but from what I've heard their reputation took a bit of a hit with some faulty screens in their last few years as a CRT manufacturer.

I'm gonna have to go by your word mate! The review sites seem to rate most monitors as good as each other so I find actual user feed-back by far the best. I really appreciate it, cheers.

I've been using the same 17" CRT since 1998 ! for q2 and other (mostly fps) games. Only just now looking on ebay for the same type of 21"+ CRT as mentioned above. Lacie 22" would be nice. They need to be local-ish though, to collect them, as they are about 20kg :)[/QUOTE]

I was a bit surprised not to be able to run native res on my 2007WFP with a 8800 GTS / C2D E6750 / 2 GB DDR2. It was just going a bit too jerky in big fights which is when you need a good framerate the most. Dropped down to 1280*800 and I guess it looks ok.

Compared to my brothers CRT though, there's just something about movement on an LCD which isn't right. Even though the 2007 has very little ghosting, nevertheless movement just seems smoother on the CRT. There's a kind of liquidity to the picture, whereas the LCD has a staccato quality.

The main difference though was the rendering of dark areas - you could still see things in dark areas on the CRT, and of course the black depth was far better. It's also a reminder when playing this sort of game that CRTs have far better contrast than an LCD.

Then there's the whole tearing issue, which means v-sync is a must on an LCD and luckily Bioshock seems to have tripple buffering.

yes you need a 640mb or 512mb 1950 pro for those resolutions or above

Urgh that site is pretty poor tbh. They literally had about two 21" in-stock. I e-mailed them for a list of available monitors (which it suggests you do) and get no reply plus their site is down now :(

Avoid them if no email reply i wasn't recommending you use them
just an example of a google search.
No email reply to interested customer=blacklisted in my opinion.

If you have a Craft store in your area then I *highly* recommend you check them out. For those who dont know - Craft take on (they dont buy) used stuff from people including computer hardware. The cool thing is that all their electronic stuff is tested in-house for safety and only then put on sale.

But I'll get to my point - I got a brilliant 19" CRT for £25. Keep an eye out and you're sure to get lucky :)

i think the 1950 pro beats the 320 gts
try alt tabbing aswell as these cards have memory fill issues
Actually the extra ram makes very little difference in Bioshock, even in very high resolutions-

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/bioshock_directx10_performance/page5.asp

I guess that's because it's using the same textures as the 360 version which has quite limited memory (512mb main, 64mb vid IIRC). Not sure where you got that about the X1950 pro from but the GTS beats it in every game by a big margin, and beats any ATI card in Bioshock-

Anyway though, I wasn't recommending that computerdisplays.co.uk place either :D just they're one of the few places with quality screens. There's plenty of them on ebay, but hardly anyone will post so you have to be local.

Not according to a recent post here stating that he gets jerkiness and slowdown maxing out bioshock on a dell 2007wfp on a 320mb 8800 gts.At higher resolutions 1600 and above the 1950 pro is right up there with the 8800 320mb it's fact. And i am talking about all sorts of other games not just dx10 bioshock.

CRT's loose they're picture quality after a while. My Mitsubish Diamond+ 19' was a lovely CRT, but it's lost it's definition at high resolutions like 1600*1200. Anyone buying second hand should be aware of this, though you can pick them up for almost free these days.

I think my TFT has a better colour definition and pixel clarity, but the CRT is far better for dark areas in gaming.

It's hard to look at a CRT for hours if your used to a TFT - make sure you whack up the refresh rate as high as you can.

Bear in mind a 19' CRT generally has a slightly smaller screen than a 19' TFT.

My CRT farts when you turn on the power :D

have you tried the samsung syncmaster seris, i think samsung still make 21" crt displays, if i am not wrong.

a bit expensive but hey i would rather buy new crt than second hand.

"""samsung crt 21" """ <-- froogle that.

I had forgotten about that. My Mitsubishi 22" was superb, in terms of picture quality, but as the years passed the colours and vibrancy tended to look a little washed out. It was only when I compared it to a newer, less used, Mitsubishi (same model), was I aware of how 'tired' mine was. It is important to get to see the CRT that you intend to buy in action for that reason alone.

My CRT farts when you turn on the power

I do the same when I switch my TFT on, then again according to my wife I do it all the time :D

I've just been reading about the image lose over time. It has put me off getting a second-hand CRT over the bay for the exact reason I can't test her :(

Getting hold of a new CRT is bloody hard though. Thanks for the tip on the "samsung crt 21" AMD but I've had no luck finding a place that stocks them.

*bangs head against wall*
