I've seen something similar with the goats on the Galápagos Islands where they were eating all the grass and plants etc meaning the native giant tortoises were drying out.
They are pests so need culling, not sure they use the most cost-effective way of doing it using a Helicopter though, and the full Camo gear whilst inside the chopper is just silly really, they are Yanks, they will always use a sledgehammer to crack a walnut, they just don't know any other way.
This is a huge huge problem is some areas of the US. For the sheer rate of kill this is without doubt one of the best ways, even then they're probably not killing them fast enough to make a viable difference.
It's neither cruel nor awesome - I don't see how killing anything can be remarked as awesome.
If the hog problem is serious then they need to do something about it and I guess this is the best way they have of doing it. There's never going to be an ultra humane way of culling/pest controlling lots of such animals. However it does seem quite wasteful.
Hopefully once they have culled the excess they can put in countermeasures, such as electrical fencing or other such things to prevent having to repeat this process.
Meh, the reason the population is out of control is because we have overpopulated ourselves and created lots of nice farms for them to munch at.
When humans create areas of easy food or with low predatory risks (game parks etc), certain species need to be controlled by culling. Not convinced a heli and M4 are the answer though....
