Cruise Control - why ?

i use it everyday sat on the M27 and M3 and surprisingly I have little need to disengage it on these routes. I also find it helps with fuel consumption..

I had mine "factory" retrofitted to the A4 last week and got to say it's great for going up and down the A50 to get to work and back. :) It's good if you're going through a set of SPECS cameras and as someone else has said, fuel consumption tends to be better for me.

Cruise gets the thumbs up from me. Had it on the 75 and on long journeys it was very useful. As Fox points out, easy way to forget about gatsos.

I'm surprised that you comment about how much more useful electric mirrors are. Do you really adjust them that often?

I don't see what the problem is. It's not like ABS or something that is permanently on. If you don't like it.... don't use it:confused:

I like cruise control.

Best gadget though I enjoy is the limiter on my dad's C240, you just set it to whatever speed you desire and you can't go any faster than that.

However, you can do full throttle launches to whatever speed it's set to, so, boil-the-hides and then it all settles down the moment you hit 30 :D

Very useful for when cameras are around too, I use it more than cruise to be honest :)

I dont think the OP has a problem per sé he's just saying its a feature he doesnt find useful so he isnt using it.

I love it though, its great on long journeys when you need to rest your foot. I assume your BMW will have a pretty adanced CC? my dads Range Rover has a nice one, it will increase revs for a hill to maintain speed and break going down again to maintain the same speed. If your worried about not having control you can always cover your break and clutch.

Like Fox, i've got to admit there are a few things I would ensure a car had if I was to buy one.

Cruise
Climate

and definately electric memory seats. They are a god send!!

Have had cruise on a couple of cars and in this country there have only been a couple of times I've missed having it on my current car. Traffic just tends to be too stop/start over here.

However on the continent I've really missed it. All those long, empty motorways in France/Germany/Italy are just gagging for cruise control.

I don't class any toys as 'essential' on a car, but probably wouldn't buy one without climate, leccy windows and mirrors, central locking.

The next car I buy I would like cruise control, my dad has had several cars with it on. Fair enough he was doing motorway miles but I think I'd make use of it, it could certainly take a bit of strain away for me.

quite like cruise control but only use it on the motorway, set to 80 and forget.

On the mondeo i like the way the pedal moves, on my step mothers old audi A4 it doesent :(

my current car is the first I have had with cruise control

I must admit it is totally lost on me as to why anyone would use or want this

When I have tried it I feel as though I do not have full control of the car and tbh see no benefit at all in having it

any thoughts ?

its an american thing while you are on really long, boring roads where you dont have to corner or stop anywhere.

hardly worth it in UK rush hour :D

Yep I use it on the same journey, A31-M27-M3, 80% cruise control outside of rush hour makes the journey a lot easier and its a suprising good route to use it on.

I quite like to louge on the back seat, engage cruise and steer with my foot. ;)

On big commutes it really does help even if I only use it occasionally it gives my legs a rest.

I also find its similar to having your charger and battery returned at 6 in the morning!!!! (private joke!)

Thats the actuator for moving the pedals on drive by wire or non drive by wire. Having a debate about this annoyance atm on another forum for retrofitting cruise....dammit!

I feel I do not have proper control and that my reaction times are impaired by using it

also are ther really many roads so empty that you can set it and cruise for miles without needing any change in speed

Drive across France - in my Golf last summer I set cruise control and didn't use my feet once in 40 minutes.

I find it is very useful for stretching your legs a bit on a seriously long journey. It's also very useful for 40mph roadwork stretches.

Cruise is good and I use it on our trips back to Swansea...but...it can be a PITA as speeds change, you hit the brakes and cruise is turned off. You then have to re-set it for lower speed or wait until traffic speed increases again.

Now the newer variable speed cruise control systems really are clever and would work a treat :)

I always find that the M74(?) (the stint between carlisle and glasgow) is pretty much empty, infact tbh except for the M4/M40/M25 and low down on the M6 i think you could use it a lot of the time.

Aye :o

Could have done with it this week. Driving to Aberdeen was boring :(
