Cruise Control - why ?

I like cruise. Never had it on my cars but took an old accord out the other day to pick my mates up and had fun with it. I would find it very useful for long motorway trip in the evening when the roads are clear.

I love cruise. Yes - it takes some getting used to as it feels very alien and like you're very removed from the control of the car at first, but once you've got used to it it's brilliant for driving on empty motorways - it's proboably about the best way of getting me to keep my speed down as I find if I have my foot on the accelerator and the motorway is empty I end up doing silly speeds all the time.

With cruise I'll set it to 85 and be pretty content at that.

I have no doubt however that if you had to break quickly, it would increase the reaction time as you're foot won't be as near to the break pedal - it should only therefore be used when the motorway is quiet.

They are really useful for parking.

Yup they are invaluable. Never kerb my alloys because of them. Pity the previous owner didn't have the same idea.

Best gadget though I enjoy is the limiter on my dad's C240, you just set it to whatever speed you desire and you can't go any faster than that.

However, you can do full throttle launches to whatever speed it's set to, so, boil-the-hides and then it all settles down the moment you hit 30 :D

Very useful for when cameras are around too, I use it more than cruise to be honest :)
You could do that with the cruise control in my BMW, it almost worked like launch control. The best fun I had with it was on the continent at the toll booths. Accelerate quickly into top gear and engage cruise control for it to launch you back up to the speed you'd set it to ;)

Loved the cruise control in my old S8 - down to the south of France was a joy. The mondeo I currently have is slighlty less entertaining though

I think CC is standard in mk3 mondeo's , generally I will set mine 1 click under the general flow of traffic to avoid catching up traffic. 6 gear, point and steer.

This plus GPS sat nav means complete no hassle motoring.

I've got CC, only turned it on a couple of times to see what it was like, and I've never used, and never will.

Its designed for boring driving situations, where your concentration is going to be reduced anyway, so why take away an important feedback and stimulus mechanism?

Madness in my book, I live to drive the car, not have it drive me.

Yeah, seems to be - had it in both the Mk3 1.8LX's that I've driven.

a) Cruising at 70-75 on Motorways and dual carriageways
b) Maintaining 30-40mph in irritating speed limits like Motorway roadworks to avoid straying over the limit - use it every day on Embankment Road in Plymouth as you set it to 40 and forget about the speed cameras.
I use it on almost every journey for exactly these reasons

I will not buy a car which doesn't have at least:

a) Air Conditioning
b) Cruise Control
c) Front/rear electric windows (Dont want a stupid handle anywhere)
d) Remote locking/electric mirrors.

I *can* (although would prefer not to) live without the rest of the stuff.

Air con is nice in cars that don't have soft tops admittedly but could you really not buy a car without electric mirrors? I just set mine and leave them, never need to adjust them until I sell the car.

EDIT : Just noticed that Mr_Sukebee just asked the same question

I have only used cruise control In a hire car in the USA and I kind of liked it. Mind you the novelty hadn't worn off so if I actually had it day in day out whether I'd still use it is anyones guess.

It felt a bit like I was playing a video game, it had a few different settings, but the one I liked was get to speed, activate CC. then a touch of the + button gave an extra 1mph, the - button slowed down by 1mph. Touch the brakes and the car slowed down, let go and it speed back up.

What i really wanted was a Dual Shock controller, then I could drive from the back seat :)

My next car will probably have CC, just because the spec I want comes with it as standard (not that I'm really bothered about it). I'll let you know what I think then...

I've never actually tried CC but I think I would use it if I had it, I have a tendency to get 'bored' on the motorway and speed up to licence losing speeds to get it over and done with, I like to think I wouldn't do that if I had CC :p

Only thing i'd say a car i'd own 'needs' is electric windows,

electric mirrors are nice, but I set them once and thats it, don't bother changing them for parking,

Don't need a memory on my seat, i'm the only driver of the car so it never moves anyway,

Air con is ok, but if it's hot i'd just take the t-bar's off and air con would be pointless so meh...

tbh if you need to rest your feet on a long journey...just reach down and use your hand instead.

I do...

Very useful for the average speed cameras on the M1 at the mo. Just pop it on 40ish and relax. :)
