DF goes into detail about the technology behind the original Crysis and why it was groundbreaking at the time(and even does stuff which isn't common now),and how an updated version would improve on the original:

They even tried it on some modern high end gaming systems, and it still is a punishing game!

Update!!

They have now made a second video about the technical aspects of Crysis2:

Also still a very good looking game. That reminds me that I still have 2 and 3 on my Origin account that I've never played!

Still wasn't as good looking as the dx9/10 jungle fight vids they released purporting to be gameplay, without heavily modding it that is.

Well no pun intended, but it's the law of the jungle with companies doing that for some time now unfortunately.

I still remember watching HL2 videos before release and them showing amazing Combine AI that ended up being scripted and never made it into the game.

No idea about half the things the dude said but a very interesting and well thought out video.

Thumbs up.

My take away from all that is that at the time the game was released, we had seen MASSIVE progress in CPU speeds and it was expected the trend would continue but we just hit that wall.

I have recently finished this on my msi gaming laptop and it ran great. Only had a odd fps drop. Still a really good shooter and think I'll start crysis 2. I haven't actually played crysis 3 so I'll get stuck into that once I'm done with 2.

Wow so it still onky uses 1 core. That's crazy

Still looks great. Shame we have moved forward so little in recent years. There was an interesting video about the Far Cry series that highlighted the many features in FC2 that were more advanced than 3, 4 and even 5.I guess its all about solid console fps these days :(

Part of it is consoles, part of it is because every person nowadays thinks they should be able to play the game at ultra settings 60fps so what's the point in developers pushing the boundaries only to be told their engine is unoptimised (the same thing levied at crysis when it was released).

Yep, also true.

I actually fished my copy of Crysis and Warhead out of the loft a few weeks ago; I completed both years ago, but I have a more powerful rig now and want to enjoy them again at a higher frame rate. Just haven't got around to reinstalling them yet though.

Yep, also true.

Using Hunt: Showdown as an example, looked fantastic maxed out but there were loads of complaints about performance and how it should be more 'optimised' (the buzzword I hear thrown around) which could dip to high 40's/mid 50's for me at 1440p on my 1080ti. So they patched it and pared back the visuals slightly to boost fps and then got accused of stealth nerfing the visuals...I laughed tbh, developers can't really win so might as well just release a game with good enough graphics that is guaranteed to hit 60+fps at 1080p+ resolutions when maxed out on mid range hardware (the Blizzard way!).

That's great thanks.

I fancy a new shooter and thought this would be perfect. I nearly picked up Wolfenstein 2 last night. I am yet to play the Metros but don't like the engine when I dabbled! And although I loved Far Cry 4, 5 is expensive and the formula is getting boring really.

Been playing a lot of Dying Light lately but that's melee really...

Anyways Crysis it is! Thanks for the help :)

if you ever played around in dev mode then you get why. also builds often in games get toned back. for performance reason.i tested many games where the first earlier builds look so much better than what comes out at the end. a prime eg of this is pubg of recent times. every person cried about performance near the start often people on lower spec rigs. i had great performance and was happy.then came the release of the official launch 1.0 and they dialed back on the graphics and lower AA settings.people say performance is better but game looks worse for it. :(

i played the very first build of crysis . cant believe its been that long.:p
