Does this work for a 6990? isnt crossfire hardcoded on these cards so it cant be turned off?
I've tried the gfx util to no avail :'(

That should work for a 6990.
Crossfire isn't hardcoded. It can be controlled / set by software.
edit - I'm not running crossfire here atm, but is there not a crossfire tab / section in the CCC under 'gaming' or 'performance' that lets you enable / disable it anymore ?
ATi used to let you enable / disable crossfire in the Catalyst Control Centre, but they removed that option in the last few driver sets afaik.
Afaik, crossfire is now controlled / set by either the Catalyst Application Profiles, or a 3rd part application like RadeonPro.
