If you set it to DX9 mode it runs MUCH better, for some reason crytek set it to default to DX10 even on the lowest settings in vista unless you tell it to do otherwise. DX9 looks near enough identical to DX10 graphically so i view this as possibly one of the worst decisions they could have made; crippling the performance of the game without making it obvious how to 'fix' it. When i switched it to DX9 my framerate doubled - i'm now able to play it in 1440x900 in 'Enthusiast' settings on a 8800GT.

i intend to play 1680x1050 native res. and 20 ~ 35 fps just does not cut me the game actually fails at story does not have a drive or repeat value i dont know how people even giving it such high scores 
i tried to finish first one 5 times and never did . just epic boring and does not look so good as advertised well at least u o play with mods tech 6 and get 10 fps lol

Oh Jesus does this mean im going to have to go back and finish the original ? I got so bored with it i activated the cheats and ran up to people with the rocket launcher. Boring wasnt the word!

Your system will easily exceed those FPS at that res in Gamer in DX9. Mine exceeds them in enthusiast at a lower res and my CPU is nowhere near as good as yours.
The intro has a black screen with people speaking over it for a while - i thought the game was broken but then the game started, it's deliberate. (assuming that's what you're talking about?)

played for about 20 minutes so far and am getting mullered by people i can't even see. think i might have to drop it down to easy. 
as for performance, well i'm playing 1680x1050, gamer mode in dx9 on vista 64 and it's playable but not really that smooth. and i can only imagine it will get worse as the action will probably intensify. i'm just strolling around at the moment.....also the jaggies with no AA are terrible. but given the performance i'm getting, there's no point turning it on.

Just been playing it in DX10 at 2560x1600 with everything at enthusiast just to test the waters and it was actually playable (just), although I haven't ventured past the first jungle area and I hear fps takes a nosedive later in the game.
The weird thing is, I tried switching to DX9 with all the same settings and it was a lot choppier than DX10.
Not your usual low FPS in DX9 though - I move the mouse about and the view moves about slowly, then sort of skips across a chunk of the game world then moves slowly again. Bizarre stuff.
I'm going to stick with DX10 for now, and play at 1920 as it's nice a smooth at that res.

I wish people would discuss the game though instead of all the talk about settings.
I wonder sometimes whether anyone here actually wants to play the game (other than me) or if you all use it to test your hardware, and to decide to buy a new graphics card so you can run it on max.
Sometimes I think you need to take a step back and just play the thing.
Going to replay the mine level now on hardest difficulty.

Well I purchased on Thursday thinking I'd be able to play it as the release date said - but wasn't able to even download until Friday - then the speed of the download was not even half of my current connection - and then after downloading it, it wanted to download 7 hours of updates :S

i should have bought from shop, instead of ordering it from jersey place. still hasn't arrived and everyone says it's quite good, and i also want to test my system upgrades now
I'm gonna try this, how do i force it into DX9?
In vista, go into the games menu (this won't be visible if you're using classic layout, so switch it back to default), right click, click 'Play DX9'.

These tweaks gave me an extra 8-10 fps on a quad core e6600 , 4 gig of ram , 8800gt - enjoy.
Create a txt doc in, "crysis warhead" directory (my documents /my games/crysis warhead) and input the following.
r_displayinfo=1
r_TexturesStreaming=0
r_UseEdgeAA=0
e_precache_level=1
con_restricted=0
d3d9_TripleBuffering=1
Save doc then name it "system.cfg" no quotes ofcourse.
Those setting sure makes use of ram. Which is a good thing. I have seen it use over 2gigs at points.
