Away until Thursday in sunny and weedy Amsterdam

The basics are not too complicated. As a CT, choose one of the bombs to defend or follow the order. Call when/if you make contact, run to help if the other bomb is getting rushed. As a T, follow the bomb or give it to someone else. Then just learn each map, particularly the fastest/safest access points and the camp/hiding spots for 1v1, 2v1 etc situations.
Played CS since the beginning, far too much but just recently tried GO.
Lag was wild, any server I tried. Ping appeared to be fine but I didnt have the netgraph on. Is it generally laggy on GO?
Any ideas?

Yeh fun games, cheers! I will try to get on later tonight. Couple of rules I learnt when starting to play CSS/CSGO:
1) Stop re-peeking! If you have peeked and spotted an enemy, don't immediately re-peek to try and pick them off. Chances are, if they have spotted you they will have their crosshair lined up and their attention will be focussed. Instead, wait for teammates and commit properly or delay the push so they think you are taking another route. There are exceptions but generally being patient keeps you alive.
2) If you don't think you can hold an angle/area because it's being pushed heavily, don't try and be a hero and go for a 5 man spraydown. Instead, shoot once, if you miss then fall back and repeat. This even applies if you have to abandon the bomb site. If you miss your shots it doesn't matter, so long as your alive and able to support your team mates when re-taking the site.

Anyone else have issues trying to join casual matches?
Some days it just won't join any match and creates one with just me and bots.

Experienced the same myself. While it was searching ,the console displayed the number of matching servers found but did not manage to get on any one of them and eventually game with bots was created. So was not sure if it was due to my connection or the CS servers in general.Kind of, seems to take a few minutes to join most games for me lately, except MM.
