CS:S worth it for the new and non-hardcore?

3 points:

1. it's very noob unfriendly - that's why it's awesome and that's why noobs like neil don't like it :)
2. forget source and play 1.6
3. again, don't listen to neil he is clearly a noob :p

This.

Hypocrite alert: I play CSS :o Only because loads of OcUKers do! I would prefer 1.6 :(

Thanks for all the advice, chaps. Can't wait to give it a try but my connection is still flaky and I'm going away for the weekend.

How is the OCUK server with regard to noobs? Will I be welcomed with open arms or shouted at for being a clueless idiot? :D

99.9% of them are noobs mate, its noob heaven.

Bought HL2 about 6 years ago (which comes with CSS for free or at least it used to). Been playing CSS regularly ever since....

Other newer games might be superior (graphics, maps, content etc) but they all seem to come and go pretty quickly....CSS still has thousands of people playing it every day for a reason....it also probably involves the most skill and strategy out of all the FPSers.

Definitely buy it, you will probably be terrible for about a year as somebody said previously, but you will find it really fun, whether you're good or bad.

i took this about five year ago, this is actually where the character is.

It is noob friendly because you aren't required to work in a team, it's pretty much free for all and no one will rage at you.
There's pleanty of room for noobs to have fun on it.

Sure you won't be able to aim as well as most people but you can follow another player around and give them back up - let them go through doors etc first then go in and help.
