Curacao XT 8970 pictured... courtesy of 4chan.

It's probably worth mentioning the 7790 had an extra 20-40% fps using same amount of power as the 7770.
Also worth looking at the frametimes for the 7790 as they were very good.

8970 should be great :)

Right, the 7790 is not Pitcairn or Tahiti, its Bonaire, Sea Islands (HD 8000)

It certainly appears more power efficient than Sothern Islands, as for Frame Latency, I don't know. it looks good but I don't know that its any better than the 7770 or 7850.

Lets wait and see :)

Best way to deal with high launch prices is to wait until prices come down, also the best way to avoid buyers remorse, take it from somebody who fell for the Nvidia Titan hype lol.

If more people voted with their wallets prices would have to come down, a lot of people cry about prices then run out and buy at launch anyway lol.

A Paradox.

nah bought a 6950 on release day was more expensive a year later, my 7970 is £30 more expensive now than 6 months ago aswell, the problem only lies with top spec gear it always has lost money/gone down in price faster, mainly due to the next gen overtaking it at mid range (which sort of happened for AMD this time with a 6970 being matched at the £200 mark) the thing is this isnt happening with this new gen of NV cards, there isnt a £200-250 card that matches the best of last gen.

Couple of issues with this particular rumour, firstly is there any unused stream processors in the currant 7970? As this new chip supposedly has more stream processors and yet there has been no news or even rumours of new chips taping out at either TMSC or Global foundries.
Secondly if they are releasing this new card in a week or two as the 8970 then the earlier statement that the Tahiti chip would carry the company till the end of the year is obviously nonsense.

I reckon it will be launched as a 7980 with a tweaked, higher clocked Tahiti chip, maybe 1200Mhz to get very close (ahead/behind) to a 780 in benchmarks

Sea Islands is already out in the form of 'Bonaire' the 7790.

Over a year ago, on Sapphires tech sheet.

A 2304sp 7970 was defo rumoured around about or just after launch of the 7970 in January '12. It was given a bit of substance due to the Sapphire tech sheet as mentioned previously.

Is the codename for the 7970 TahitiXT? If so, could AMD release a superclocked version with 2304sp's (increase of around 11% from 7970) as a TahitiXTX and call it something like a 7980 or 7970XTX to compete with the 780 and perhaps undercut it on price as a short term high end solution until the end of the year when the 8 series should make an appearance?
