Curious...

Isn't the £70 price tag just speculation? I wouldn't be surprised if the prices remain the same, jumping from £54.99 ish to £70 doesn't read right at all.

It’s a balance between the price of the console (loss for Sony/Microsoft) and the % Sony/MS will ask developers for each game sold.
Back in the 90’s the 3DO console sold for a high price but the games were cheaper because they didn’t lose money on each console, so requested less % from each game sold. This formula didn’t work out as people were put off by the high machine cost.

If Sony/MS chose to take a big loss on the Console then games will be more expensive as their % cut will be more.

Totally. We've seen nothing official from either Microsoft or Sony.

2K already saying prices are going up. For 2K to say that is really extracting the urine as they are one of the worst offenders for MTXs and Loot Boxes.

I did see that and promptly forgot about it! I've got no interest in 2K games, thankfully. I am interested to see what MS and Sony come up with for first party stuff. That's mostly what I play these days. If does end up being £70 across the board they won't be getting anything out of me. I can just about stomach £45-£50 physical but £70? Nope.

It is literally just one title from one publisher that is trying it on at the moment. There is absolutely no indication that standard prices are going up. If you buy a title that supports Smart Delivery, Microsoft have already said there is no price increase for Series X.

Microsoft said:
it means that if you purchase the Xbox One version of a supported title, we will deliver the best version of it to your Xbox One, as usual. If you decide to jump into the next generation with Xbox Series X, we will automatically provide the Xbox Series X version of the game at no additional cost when it becomes available.

The article quotes the current price at $60 and we usually pay £54.99 so the quoted $70 isn't going to be £70 on the nail, it'll be less.

And it's only 2k games saying that not the whole industry or Even Sony themselves.

I very much doubt that Sony will increase digital content from £54.99 to £70 but time will tell as usual, but if so, then I'm definitely waiting for the sales to buy anything at all if and when I jump in to PS5.

I've just seen a couple of pre-orders listed for £70 but those are PS4 games with free upgrade to PS5 version. Could that be what has caused some confusion?

It will still mean an added £10 to games over here. So £54.99 will become £64.99 and £59.99 will become £69.99.

Clearly you're not clued up to how the games industry works; if this works for one publisher then they will all adopt it in an instant. Any money making scheme is quickly copied.

Are they expensive though really? The idea that games should remain under £50 from the mid 90s up to now is odd. Everything else goes up with inflation, so why shouldn't they?

Also, old Nintendo prices say hi.

While it's true making a game today no longer means 3 or 4 developers and a year of time like in the 16 bit days, gaming has become far more mainstream entertainment medium. Their total addressable market is far bigger.

You only have to look at Square moaning about the tomb raider reboot "poor" sales to see the industry is addicted to massive profits.

Quite right, the potential market is way way larger than it used to be. It does mean that the stakes are higher now though, it costs a lot more to make games than it used to, and there's a huge market. So if you get a hit, you can make a lot of money. If you make a flop, you stand to lose a lot of money.

Image paying £70 for fifa every year and what £120 for the ultimate edition.
That's nothing - you could easily spend that and more per day on FIFA points to purchase packs and FUT Draft entries.
Most game pricing models are moving towards a lower initial price then they get you with continuous pay wall DLC updates. Fortnite is a free game, yet every year the revenue it generates is between $1-$2bn

Now a days the base game is below £50. To get the "complete game" generally costs more than that for many AAA games recently.

I'd rather pay £70 for a game like Modern Warfare and no micro transactions. The FTP nature of Warzone means it's a cheaters paradise

Every time a new console comes out the prices of games tries to go up but it never seems to stick. It’s crazy that game prices have not really changed much in over 20 years but also a good thing for buyers.
They said that dlc would keep the main game prices lower but we just get parts of games now or big chunks held back as dlc in some cases.
