Current baggage rules coming into the UK

My dad just checked with the airlines, rules are basically what's there on hte bbc site, even for people stopping at london.

No hand baggage, nothing to carry except important papers etc.

I was hoping i'd be able to take my mp3 along but guess not :( Most I guess i'l be able to is maybe take a book across in my hand.

On the bright side, this airline has loads of movies on demand and music etc :D
 
How exactly is the rule of no hand luggage going to stop a plane being blown up if someone puts a bomb in their hold luggage?

Just the same way as if someone puts a bomb in regular checked baggage. They x-ray them and a lot of the time if there are any electronic devices that appear "strange" they'll open it to check.

A bomb in hand luggage could consist of two chemicals which when mixed (by hand) would explode. This would not require any electronics and hence would not be picked up on x-ray machines. If you were to put a bomb in the hold it would require some sort of electronic detonator which they could pick up when the bags are x-rayed.

They must have hated my bags when coming out here then, it was full of networking equipment and network cables.

I'm glad to hear people haven't been having issues with hand luggage coming into the UK. I'm flying out there on the 23rd for i28. And I really really don't want to have to spend the 4-5 hour flight sitting there doing nowt.

I can't have issues, no hand luggage allowed :p Checked with the airline, and nothing allowed. Flight's tomorrow though. They may relax a bit more by the time you're flying.

Yeah don't I know it. We usually have 40kgs of test gear in our metal boxes. Spectrum Analysers, signal generators, test equipment, and all sorts of other gadgets and gizmos. Though we've learnt to unplug/isolate the batteries as this is the one thing that they don't like.

I don't think there are any special restrictions cause of what's happened so just the usual ones.

usual depends on the country your travelling to, so you'l have to check, but it's usually a few thousand US $.
Restriction isn't on the money your carrying out, only on what you'r bringing into the country (any country) as far as i know.

Money laundering, and yes there are restrictions.

I was only talking about this to my brother in law the other day, he's an undercover customs officer.

From what i can recall, it's £1K, however, they do use their common sense (for a family holiday e.t.c).

He stopped 2 guys leaving for India or Pakistan, i can't remember which one now and they had £24k on them in hard cash, now thats not normal really is it?

Took the cash from them , gave them a receipt, they never flew that day and came back the next day with proof of where the cash came from and what it was for.
It was for a swimming pool believe it or not, came with statements, order form and brochure.
 
Well, I'm off to the Maldives soon and it looks like a loooooooongggg flight for me with no mp3 player or at least psp.
Looks like the godawful inflight carp.

What about Duty Free?????
If they allow you to take this on then, why, because has somebody tasted all the beer/spirits before they get to the shop?? I think not.

I'm all for the extra checks anyway if it stops innocent people being injured / killed.
 
90% sure the amount you can easily take is £10k. Of course, you're allowed to take more, but you may have to prove its source, what you need it for etc.

Duty Free is banned from US flights btw. That said, it would be a lot harder for terrorists to conceal a liquid explosive in the duty free store, then to purchase it, than it would be to just take it on board as they planned to.
 
Just reached london. Books were not a problem, carried oen across easily and i feel I could have taken my mp3 player easily as well. A couple of people had mobile phones with them and I even saw a guy with a laptop at security check (not 100% sure if he was travelling to london though)

A no. of people were carrying some bags with them as well and there wasn't an issue. And this is after checking with the airline that nothing would be allowed, so a bit annoying.

Flight did take about 1 and a half hours to land though. Just kept circling for over an hour due to traffic.

Rules might be stricter though (and I think they are) for flights going out of the UK.

I heard somewhere that Duty Free in departure is pretty much shut (wasn't in India though) and only the arrival one is working (I can confirm that taht was operational)
 
Yeah. On non US flights to the UK it's business as usual. I flew back from Lisbon with BA on Friday and carried my usual carry on (cameras, mp3 player (which I used during the flight), books and even liquids).

Personally I'd feel safer if the baggage restrictions were put in place on inbound flights too, although a mp3 player and a good book really helps a flight go a lot quicker, so I guess it's all swings and roundabouts.
 
coming into the UK is currently different as obviously the threat was on planes leaving the UK but things are also slightly different for flights going to usa and europe etc.

i will be going on holiday soon and it says on My Travel airlines that things can be purchased airside (after the security checks) except for flights to the u.s.
 
Damn, meant to be flying to Canada on friday this week from Manchester. Hope there aren't any problems with my flight!

Anyone know if mobile phones are totally banned? What are the chances of this being a little less strict on a flight to Canada?

Because its going to be a nice 8-9 hour flight with only the standard entertainment....bah. I bought a spare battery for my phone and put films and mp3s on for the trip...hope its not for nothing!

You can take as much as you want (other countries restrictions apply going in obviously) out of the country providing you have legitimate proof of where it came from.

It purely is for money laundering prevention.

IIRC the ceiling for a single person is £1K (used to be £3k) the customs officers do use common sense though i.e a clubber going to ibiza for 2 weeks with £1.5k.

As said before, this was a conversation on monday with a senior customs and excise officer assigned to this duty at one of the major airports.

Never thought the bro-in-law would be so useful :D
 
Six6Six - i'm going to canada soon as well. the best thing to do is call up the airline.
btw i thought mobiles weren't allowed to be used on planes anyway as they could interfere with equipment.

At least my flights only 2 hours or so :D
