So the announcment this week of the new 7820x got my attention.

Do we have any idea roughly how much better this will be than my current cpu?

I use my rig to game in 4k and encode 4k videos and work in Photoshop and Lightroom all while it encodes 8 CCTV camera's..

Current Set up is

5930k
1080TI
64gb DDR4
Strix x99 Motherboard
Corsair 1000w PSU

Cheers Yall

with that much work being carried out concurrently you may want to see how threadripper pans out as its likely to be a fair bit cheaper than intels offering with less silliness like 28 pci-e lane circa £600 CPU's with non soldered IHS's like were apparently getting with skylake-x

I would wait, reviews aren't far away and as with all new platforms there will be the usual teething problems and low availability. Also your current platform is hardly a slouch, consider a 5960x, 6900k or a 6950x as a drop in upgrade.

Thanks for the advice, i guess im old school, AMD in my youth kept up with intel but ever since, they have just been budget, Ryzen looked decent but hasnt really lived upto the hype.

How has it not lived up to the hype?

Wait for Threadripper. Ryzen has lived up to the hype (better and cheaper than Intel) particularly if you are not just gaming. Also, the gaming situation is improving dramatically with patches in certain games (Ashes of the Singularity, Rise of the Tomb Raider with 50% increase in performance, Dota 2 and Total War). Prey also performs better on Ryzen than Intel equivalents.

I can now say with confidence that AMD were telling the truth when they said that the game performance problems are due to a lack of optimisation for their new architecture and not due to any inherent flaws in said architecture. I am confident that most new games (certainly games coming 6 months from now) will not suffer from these problems and should be faster on Ryzen if AMD do a decent job with developer relations.

By the way, if you are concerned about memory just buy dual rank sticks and run at 2400MHZ. They are between 2666MHz and 3200MHz single rank RAM in terms of game performance and outperform 3200MHz in certain games. This speed is also guaranteed to work if you use no more than 2 sticks. Most 16GB sticks are dual rank. Check your motherboard RAM QVL compatibility list if you want to be sure the kit is compatible.

Totally fine with one LOL

It does everything i ask, but asking it to do so much, im always on the prowel for more power

Am i not right in saying the 1800x wouldnt be worth upgrading to from my 5930k?
Maybe, that's like asking if it's worth upgrading to a 6900k on the Intel side. However, Ryzen doesn't end with the 1800X. Ryzen threadripper CPUs are coming out soon with 10 cores minimum all the way up to 16 cores with good clock speeds and a massive 64 PCIe lanes. Threadripper would certainly be an upgrade over what you have now. The second tier 16 core Threadripper is rumoured to only cost around £750 vs £1700 for the equivalent Intel Skylake-X. All lower core count threadrippers would be cheaper than this.

you would be correct, especially if your overclocked to circa 4.4Ghz-4.6 (on mobile so can't see your specs if in your sig)

with lots going on though 10(+) cores may be a worthwhile upgrade so it's wait to see how skylake-x compares to threaripper

Ok so sounds like Threat Dropper might be my first AMD CPU in a good 15 or so years them.

Any ideads when it's likey to drop?

If correct July.

If you have a 5930K, the only upgrade atm is 10+ cores. Only if someone stuck on the 3930K/4930K moving to Ryzen 7 will see some big perf boost.
However if you want more cores right now, buying a 6900K or 5960X (around £930) is madness for the money they have.

To put in perspective, for less money than a 6900K or a 5960X you can buy the Ryzen 1700, X370 board and 2 GTX580s :p
(Assuming you plan to use the current ram you have).

Or you can buy a single GTX1080Ti, a B350 board, 1700 and spend around £90 more, than a 6900K/5960X on it's own......

And if you compare it to 6950X, you can buy the new Titan Xp, B350/X370 board, R7 1700 and still have money left. (or 2 GTX1080Tis).......

To put in perspective some pricing around here........

The 1800X is a little better than the 6900K, the 6900K is the same CPU that you already have but its a later bin so its clocked higher.

Right now, no, there is nothing worth upgrading as right now all the best CPU's from AMD and Intel are not much better than your 5930k.

If you wait a while there will be a 10 core Kabylake refresh called cCoffeelake, £1500 for 2 more cores and another clock speed bump.

Edit.. its actually a 6 core.. my bad.

A 6900K or Ryzen 7 will net you 2 more cores, the Ryzen 7 is the no brainer in that.

are we talking , worth while buying a new Mobo and CPU faster?
I still think you should wait for threadripper and not get the 1800X given your workload. At the very least the 1800X will be cheaper when threadripper releases than it is now and you'll be able to make an informed choice because you'll know motherboard and RAM prices.

Also,if you want to overclock, a 1700 or 1700x is much better value than an 1800X anyway.

For your workload, I would put a second PC together. I use two PC's as its's better for my work and I spread the work over both. Threadripper looks to be the best option as it has more PCI-E/cores/RAM + MM will have lots of R7's for sale:)
