Curry conundrum, curry for a wimp.

Sounds good - and good job on making yourself try new things rather than stick with things you know you like :)

Rogan Josh is great but I think you may find it a little spicy from what you've said. I know I already suggested it but I think you would really enjoy a biriyani. It's a really tasty dish without pushing the spice envelope too much.

The sauces you had would have been mint sauce and lime pickle. You normally get mango chutney too.

Next time step up the spice a bit. Maybe ask for the restaurants bog standard curry. Also, a dopiaza is very tasty and not that hot.

Experiment. Indian food is godlike. If you don't try a lot of it, you really are missing out.

how did you get lime pickle from onion salad.

yep good on trying new things. its what i do 90% of the time at restaurants, especially posher ones. something that i've never tried or is hard/time consuming to make at home.

People need to stop thinking spice is 'heat; It's not. It's a mix of all aromatic/herbs/chilies and then more. Indian is not about heat. It's about flavor and a passion for taste. There is no 'step up', go for the most flavorsome dish, mix and match you will bet surprised at what you may like, or not.

Actually, I think he probably did have mango chutney. Why would the restaurant give salad and an onion salad? I wager that the salad he mentions was the onion salad.

because onion salad/chutney is a normal poppadom topping and is exactly how he describes it, and is nothing like lime pickle or mango chutney.
i would be shocked if he liked lime pickle, a lot don't like it even if they manage heat and most places lime pickle has a big chilli hit.

Well all I know is that every restaurant I've been to has given us an onion salad, lime pickle and a mango chutney.

it varies from place to place, round here you get the lot.
mango, onion, lime, that red coconut stuff i don't even know the name off and raita (which is just a bit boring)
my personal favs are the lime pickle and coconut, and don't let them take the mango away and have that with a hot curry and naan.

My takeaway also delivers some kind of bright red chilli sauce that's really sweet.

To be honest I used to hate spicy food, forced myself to try a few hot dishes and now I'm all over it.

If that doesn't tickle your fancy my favorite mild dish is a Garlic Chicken Saagwala. Absolutely top.

Indeed, the two are mixed up a lot and tbh I find myself using them incorrectly when I'm not concentrating.

The only ones i dont like are the creamy ones especially the horror that korma. Like baby food.
I like most others but do like a good Naga curry, the chili used has such great flavour.

Well I'm home now, here's an update.

We went to an Indian place and sat in for the meal. I had a poppadom to start which came with 3 dishes, 1 of salad and the other 2 were sauces. One looked like garlic and herb dip but it had like a fresh taste to it and was sweet to taste and a bit minty, the other dish had diced onions in a brownish/reddish sauce that was a bit like vinegar but again was really nice and sweet tasting.

Then we had starters, I chose Samosa which came which a lemon slice to drizzle and a bit of salad, I chose beef filling. Overall it was nice but a bit dry. I swapped a Samosa for an Onion Bhaji which was nice too. I considered having chicken chat because I know I like it but I wanted to try new stuff.

So for the main dish I chose a chicken pasanda with pilau rice. The pasanda was sweet with no hotness at all, I didn't dislike it but wasn't overly fond of it either, it was just "alright", I ate most of it tho and only left some because I felt full.

Overall it was a good experience and something I want to repeat and be more adventurous with. What I want next is a rogen josh.

Beef samosa???

you need to try a more authentic indian tbh, you will be amazed at the difference between proper indian food that is eaten in india and the stuff they serve in indian restaurants in the UK

try a bhoona next time it's the go to plain curry. the actual plain curry on the menu is basically gravy and should be avoided, completely bland.

Another development.

Someone who went last night said today that the brown reddish dip was mango chutney, this is the one I described as pieces of onion with a sweet vinegar like taste, some people correctly guessed what it was even from my bad description.

The other dip after a glance at Google is mint yogurt, looks like this - http://funcooking.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/Yogurt-Mint-Dip004.jpg I feel like describing this as looking like garlic and herb dip is accurate ;)

Now the big development. Brother ordered out earlier so I had something too... a chicken curry! It was nice, much nicer then Pasanda. The menu said it's hot and spicy but it was actually quite mild. One forkful would hit me at the back of the mouth but the next one wouldn't so I'm not really sure what the sensation was, I asked my brother if he gets the same thing or anything and he just shrugged

I want a proper indian chicken curry next. This chinese place feels very cheap, the chicken in the curry was pretty crappy like it's been defrosted and the rice keeps the form of the container when emptied so that's prepped who knows how long and reheated to order.

I'm getting there, Indian chicken curry next then a rogen josh.

Glad to hear. That's the way spice works really. It might hit you to start with but you soon get used to it and enjoy it. I always tell my girlfriend it's that moment when you first get the spice hit and stop eating with your mouth open like a goldfish that makes it ten times worse. Just have some rice and keep eating. It's not a macho thing, just the way spice works. That goes for the low spice stuff that you're having too.

I'm not surprised you like it compared to Chinese curry. Chinese curry sauce had its place but it's nothing compared to Indian sauces. It's a bit like comparing an Italian restaurants tomato pasta sauce with a bottle of ketchup :)

Had a lovely curry last night with the girlfriend. Prawn danzak, I asked for it a little spicier. Really nice sour sauce with lentils. Love it.

Another entry to my saga.

I had a Lamb Rogan Josh last night. It was supposed to be "medium" like the chicken curry I had before this but I didn't find any kind of hotness to it, was lovely though and much better than the chicken curry which had poor chicken cuts in it imo. This rogan josh had red and green peppers in the mix and what looked like clovers, and the garlic naan I had was huge, like a small dominoes pizza.

Gutted to see the thread start off with many calling Indian food just hot

Happy to see op tried some stuff and enjoyed it

India is such a huge and varied place with so many influences that there has to be something for everyone !

I'm not into super hot food and chilli's etc. But 3 weeks in various parts of India and I enjoyed every single thing I ate. Would love a decent curry right now

could try
Palak (spinach based) <- i've never had a hot one of these, but apparently my wife had one the other week.
kasmir, mild curry with fruits.
