Curtains open or closed when away?

Apparently burglars have a sophisticated way of determining if you are in or out. apparently they knock on your front door and see if anyone answers.

Curtains shut for me as they are shut most of the time anyway (the rear of my house is south facing and gets to bright and hot if they are not shut. The lounge at the front only tends to have them open at the weekend and then there also a blind on the window which means from outside you can't actually tell if the curtains are drawn or not from the path).

With things like takeaway menus sticking out the letter box I have an agreement with one of my neighbours that we let each other know when we are going to be away more than a couple of days so that we can text each other if something bad happens to our houses and to push things like this completely through the letter box so they are not left sticking out.

He is awful, but that's actually a very good point. Not putting these things all the way through the post box is a security risk. Do they do this for a reason, apart from laziness?

Most of the time its because mailbox's in PVC fittings are so tight, with thick brushes that to guide one paper leaflet through it takes a considerable amount of time. When you're working on payment per route, you don't have time to faff about making sure each one is perfectly in the box. You'd end up with far less than minimum wage doing that.

The only way to get around this is mod your mail box to be easier to push items through.

Even when I lived on the ground floor, I'd just draw the blinds but leave the curtains open - I like having light in the house. I'd pretty much leave the blinds closed all the time, except at the back of the house/flat as there is more privacy there. It's more about privacy for me.

My dad reckons you should leave them open because having them closed for a week implies the house is unoccuppied - he also leaves a light on towards the back of his house.

Burglars aren't going to burgle a random home though? They scope out properties and look in windows to find out if tablets, laptops camera etc live there.

They aren't going to waste their time burglarizing a house where they don't know for certain a) if there is booty and b) exactly where the booty is.

They want to be in and out asap.

Our neighbours on ground floor got burgled this year so spoke to the cops about how burglars work - before you all start calling me a burglar! :o
