custom build or Cataclysm Hogger

with my build you could overclock to at least 4ghz on the stock cooler as sandy bridge processors run pretty cool and if you want to overclock further then just upgrade the cpu cooler to one like this afterwards :)

Builds are pretty identical - thanks a lot for that.

The Corsair ram seems like the shot.. ive heard a lot of good things about their ram.

If i were to clock the processor would you advise better cooling at all - or just take it up slowly and it should be good?

thanks.

with the second i3 build i posted i did include an aftermarket heat sink. but with the i5 i have heard people get about 4.2 off standered cooling i have a corsair A50 on mine at 4.4ghz and temps never go over 55C

So, i had decided to go for the cheaper option.. i like the sound of being able to clock it pretty sweetly too.

how ever looks like i bought myself a few days to look things over as i sent the money to the wrong account and need to wait 2 days to get it back to my account. Magic.

The first-gen i3 chips can still perform well, and if your not wanting to run things like Crysis, you'll find it does a good job :)

yea I3 build, It would be kinda senseless paying an extra hundred or so when really im just going to be using the desktop for 3-4 months.

Question; whats the main diffrences between the two I3 chips that were spoke about in your first build Kiiyzoo and in pohly's last?

Back again; ive had a change of heart.

I've had another payday after looking at the bank and seeing that you can pay with finance over 12 months interest free I've decided to go all out how ever there are a few things i'd be looking for.

Once again the system is pretty much getting made for world of warcraft; i want the system spec'ed somewhat future proof in the sense that in 6 months ill be wanting to buy another 2 monitors there for probably dual up gfx cards; so the case will have to be big enough as well as probably add water cooling however ive had nothing to do with water cooling up to now also a powerful enough psu to run it in the future.

Apart from that the builds pretty flexible most that will be getting ran at the same time is probably 3-4 copys of wow; web browser; itunes. Aslong as it can run with no issues ill be singing.

New budget 1000-1200 (no os/monitor needed)

Thanks in advance.

This has everything that you want i.e a case big enough for water cooling, 8GB RAM to handle many open tabs/programs, big PSU to handle another GPU.

I was gonna put a 580 in but I thought that if your getting three monitors then your better off with ATI as you use use 3 monitors without having to add another graphics card in, giving you the option to buy one a bit more in the future if your tight for funds.

6990 was way out of budget and it seemed pointless putting a 6970 in when you can flash a 6950 to perform as good as, but I have heard of some problems with running two flashed cards in crossfire but hopefully someone will shed some light on that as I'm not really that in the know about it, you still have space in your budget to upgrade to a 6970 or 580 if you wanted to, as well.

thanks for that Jack it looks pretty nice. The budget is a little flexible after reading up on the solid state hd's I think maybe upgrading that so that its big enough to fit wow on it as well that would benefit me a lot as that is going to be the primary use of this system.

anyone else got any ideas :P

how big is wow? With Windows and apps, you will use around 25-30GB. More considering swap file and hibernation file. So we're talking 15-25GB at least left for WoW.

£1200. 2600K hyperthreading and 16GB for multiple wow instances, 6950 2GB, SSD for WoW + OS + apps, 750W for x fire later. Still, waaaay over specced really, for just a game.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM £244.99

But really, I wouldn't spend that much. Oh and forget about flashing the 6950. Although there is room for a better graphics card, by cutting down memory / SLI-XFire requirements.

one thing to think about is how wow handles its patches ie.. badly.
its usage of space when patching is appalling, now with the new downloader it seems better but really it is just all hidden in the background. so space on your ssd is at a premium when patching.
personally if i was buying an ssd for the os and wow it would be at least 128Gb.

Fair enough. Or just one SSD for WOW and the OS on the hard drive :) slooooowww.... or cut down to 8GB (that's plenty already) and get a 128GB with the money. You don't need a uber fast SSD to gain a massive advantage over a hard drive btw.

uhm..

Okay so, i was somewhat afraid to post here I've been changing my mind heaps about this build - and im sorry for that some might think im here messing around wasting time how ever i can assure you its totally not the case.

I got a phone call today and im due back to garrison on monday the 6th so i need this system fast to get it running in time.

I'm a freak when it comes to wanting the best top of the market ect ect. The system i've speced bellow is what i beleive would make me mad happy. I know - way over speced but hey!

Okay so my question whats your thoughts on the spec bellow; im abit unsure on the psu also i would rather have the 12gig ram aswell.

this system comes to about 1800-1900 if you would strongly recommend a huge change please tell my why and throw the spec at me :P

Thanks a lot for all the help so far.

If you're spending that much on a case get a HAF-X not the 1200.

The HAF-X is a much more modern case and great for air cooling.

Edit: Just seen the HAF-X is out of stock.

I'm sure there must be better cases than the 1200. It's a bit long in the tooth now.

You mentioned 12GB of RAM but specified 8GB. 8GB is better as it will run properly in dual channel mode.

The WD Caviar Black is no better than other 1TB drives which can be had for less money.

The only other 1TB drive in stock is this one:

Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM £42.98

OcUK seem to be running out of stock on all the good stuff :(

They've only got one 6990 of any description in stock at £580.

Two 6950's or even 6970's are cheaper.

No need for the Caviar Black, just go for a Samsung F3. Not sure about the case as I haven't heard too much about it. The rest is good.

Edit: just seen the F3 is out of stock...may as well get the Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB (still cheaper than the WD lol)

yea im pretty gutted the haf x is out.. i was really wanting it hah - but like i said time is really a factor here. Ill switch the HD, also about the gfx card - i was kinda wanting that as 6-8 months along the line i can get a second and maybe xfire them.

Also thanks a lot for going over the ram thing for me; sounds like 8 gig is the shot there then.

I guess ill keep reading up on the cases; (the haf x seems to be all that anyones talking about! - gutted hah)

thanks guys.
