Customers PC marked their carpet who's liable?

Probably the wrong thing to do buy I refunded the pc and sent him £50 on top.. I also realised I spend too much time helping people for no or little financial reward so I'll be telling various people I don't work any more and be more selective of people I'll help (this is a hobby not my main job) . I'll also move to a strict if I'm not there to fix it I'm not touching it (literally not touching it) policy..

One incident in 100s (if not 1000s) of jobs over nearly 2 decades but also made me realise I wasted so much time just helping people for littlr or no money (this one job was probably no profit for 2 visits / 2 hours of my time just because I felt sorry for him as he is disabled / poor)

Crazy, but your call. Do you have any confirmation from the guy that this is now settled? Email, text etc.

It's a shame one person has put you off helping others, but i get where you are coming from. I hope you have made it clear to the very selfish person that you will no longer be able to assist him and he should seek help elsewhere in future (standby that despite you have been very generous, you will now be made out to be the bad guy).

Old rubber is horrible when it goes all sticky, right pain to get off.

Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) works well but probably not on carpet, perhaps a citrus based sticky stuff remover and a steam cleaner will do it. Probably cost you less than £30 and then never deal with this customer again.

This was me about 20 years ago when I used to supplement my income with PC builds and repairs. The majority of people were very decent but I had plenty of morons arguing over payment and warranty etc.

I gave up after I was called out to look at a faulty monitor and mouse. So I did a house visit to look at them and both were dead but that I could replace them for a fee that would include the call-out costs of course. The guy then got very aggressive saying I was the one who sold him the current ones about 5 years earlier and that I “owed” him a new monitor and mouse.

I had to push past the guy to get out of the house and make a getaway. He was way bigger than me as well, so it was not a nice situation to find myself in. I was phoned later by a friend who surprisingly knew all about the incident. It turned out I that about 5 years previously I sold a used PC setup cheap through him, to his unknown to me brother in law. His brother in law felt that I somehow owed him a lifetime warranty on a now very old PC and Monitor.

The worst thing about this planet is the people. More bad ones than good ones.

I would say most are indifferent or if you prefer a more positive description, decent. This is on a sliding scale from bad to good. Though the really bad ones tend to be more noticeable and have a bigger impact than their relative numbers would suggest. Most people play by societal rules of engagement so to speak. They just get on with gettin on and will happily let you do the same and will even be known to perform the odd act of kindness for a stranger. The really good ones go out of their way to make other peoples lives better even at their own cost (paramedics, volunteers, carers etc).

The bad ones are out only for themselves and screwing people or the system over, means nothing to them. The fact that getting what they want usually means someone else being hurt in some way does not matter.

This is why you need business insurance. I take it you weren’t registered.

I’m really not so sure what to think of this thread. I guess you been too nice in the past and now someone has won.

Well he (the carpet guy) will be dammed when his PC goes poop or needs a new carpet and the person who wants to help is now "twice shy". Carpet guy unlikely to learn his lesson, but karma thankfully does hit some of these people. Props to OP for being the decent guy.

Problem is there’s always another one somewhere will be a next target of tech support.
