CV in email

Sorry to thread hijack but...

When sending a covering letter/cv in e-mail form, should the covering letter be the content of the e-mail itself, and then the cv as an attachment? Or should the covering letter and cv both be attached, then write something else in the e-mail (formally/informally?...)

I always send both as attachments, then just write in the email,

I usually use the email as the covering letter with the CV attached.
