Cyber Squatting

Speak to ICANN or a solicitor who is familiar with ICANN/Internet Laws. Cyber Squatters have been forced to handover domains many times already.

So whilst you're complaining about this guy holding onto his domain you're also buying up any domain that's a bit like the one you use for your business? Hypocrite tbh :p

not really. google's done the same thing. type gogole.com and google will come up...

He is not squatting though if he has had it over 10 years and is clearly using the site.

He isn't using the site... it hasn't been updated since 1996.

Agreed, we aren't taking names which are likely to be used for other companies, merely spelling our website name wrong and getting alternatives that people might make mistakes on. That way it directs more business our way, rather than them type it wrong and hit some holding page and get fed up, thus loosing a "hit" on our real page.

If he's using it legitimately and hasn't obviously set it up as a link farm to steal your traffic then there's not a lot you can do besides pay up or forget about it.

That fact that its not been updated does not mean it is not in use.
Indeed. He could be using it for email or any number of other functions that don't necessitate having a website.

I have looked and I know its not been updated according to his text at the bottom of the site (which may or may not be accurate by the way). Looks like he is offering services according to http://www.webmart.com/services.html and if these dont conflict with what your company offers I dont see there is anything you can do.

How long has your company been in business? Do you have this name trademarked? If so from when?

My advice, Tell him you arent interested, he'll probably wet his pants at the lost cash he could have made.

Thats when you attempt to haggle his price down.

if you're a uk company, why are you worried about having the .com?

I'm fairly sure anyone looking for your company, would either go straight to .co.uk or try .co.uk if they found the .com clearly wasn't you.

There's lots of companies who have the .co.uk but not the .com.

I can think of countless electricial retailers who only hold the .co.uk (This website right here infact being one of them!!!) There are even a few of which that direct you from .com -> .co.uk

If you're uk, then use the .co.uk domain name, that's what it's there for. ;)

Having actually looked at the site, it's a blatant squat. The owner has mocked up a dummy site that "offers services" to avoid exactly what you want, whilst appearing completely undesirable so that they never actually get any bother. Good luck proving this though.

We have been trading 11 years. WEBMART is a registered trademark and we are currently updating our Corporate website, as we rarely use it due to the nature of our alternative website which is very swanky and contemporary (unlike our homepage).

We are moving into Worldwide trade, which is why .co.uk is good, but could be better.

He doesn't deserve £50,000, imo.
