Cyclists Jumping red lights!

When I was 13 doing my paper round, was on the path along side a VERY busy main road.

PCSO stopped me and said i'd get a 30 quid fine if i'm seen on the path again.

If your on a racing bike and going at 30mph then yes, get on the road, but I know i'd rather have my future children riding on the path!

it sometimes really is safer.. i always ride slow but safely on a pavement if there is heavy rain or wind or together.. really its a no brainer why put your life at risk if i can ride slow and steady home and be safer getting there

I cycle daily and I cycle through red lights, but ONLY through pedestrian crossings (ie not a junction) and only if there's no pedestrians and at a very slow speed.

Why? Because I could just as easily dismount, push my bike the 1m over and hop back on, and there's no logical difference.

There's plenty of morons that skip junction red lights though and they've got what's coming to them.

I don't get this - maybe as I'm not a cyclist myself so I'm not trying to give any negative attitude, but is there any reason as to why some cyclists will stay on the road instead of using the empty cycle lanes next to them? I realise some cycle lanes on roadsides are a nightmare and are actually quite dangerous to ride in but I've seen it numerous times where there's been a perfectly flat and smooth cycle lane on pavements too. Just wondering if there's any specific reason for it as I see it so often I must be missing something.

Most cycle lanes aren't great sadly. The worst ones are those that give priority to junctions meaning you have to slow down/stop every 200m or so. Utterly pointless. Also drains can be pretty bad.

The worst cycle lanes are those that have been specially built, the best are ones that are just red paint at the side of a pre-existing road.

The number of cars I see turning right on red, when the lights are filter arrows, annoys the hell out of me, even as a driver. It's a filter arrow. If it's red, don't assume you can go. This isn't America!

Cyclists can be just as guilty of poor road knowledge

Just got a new bike, roads in this country are terrible, this is Wigans council Idea of a bike lane

By law you can cyle onto the path, passed the lights and back on the road, stupid.

I cycle on the path some times, not at top speeds, the state of some driving I dont care, safer on the path at times.

Cycled back home today and saw a lunatic cyclist speed past a red light. A few minutes later I see him on the side of the road getting a ticking off from the police. Justice served.

I do slowly cross red lights if its either a pedestrian crossing or left at a junction. If its quiet and you can see the road conditions I don't see why not. As someone posted earlier I could just hop off my bike walk the couple of metres and jump back on my bike. If I'm not obstructed anyone else I don't see the issue.

When I cycle I do the same as mavers and russinating. Fortunately I find most people on the road are quite sensible, the 1-2% really increase the danger though. Once I was cycling home on a fairly narrow 2 way road with cars parked on one side, just narrow enough for cars to pass each other. On this road when there are oncoming cars and cars behind I deliberately cycle in the middle of the lane so cars don't attempt to overtake when there are oncoming cars as they would have to pass within cm of me. It's a short, flat inner city road with lights at the end so this isn't slowing traffic down significantly. Most drivers can see what i'm doing and why. Once though somebody repeatedly honked at me and had a face that said 'get the **** out of my way' so I showed him what I thought with the finger. After the next oncoming car passed he drove alongside me and went to swerve into me just as we reached the cars stopped at the lights. He had to break hard to avoid rear ending the first car, ****ing mentalist.

That's ridiculous, either the traffic lights should be replaced with a zebra crossing or there should be new traffic lights that make it ok for cyclists go to through them.
