Cyclists two abreast on busy 'A' road, selfish?

Oh dear.
He actually knows it is VED but can't understand why some vehicles don't have to pay it or pay less and calls us smart arses but doesn't realise VED doesn't pay for road maintenance.
Best post yet.

I never said it outright pays for highway maintenance, i said road tax helps fund the maintenance of the roads which it does. The money goes into a big pot and is split here and there, highway maintenance included.

My smartarse comment was to the jobsworths picking me up on the fact that it isn't road tax, but the fact of the matter is, VED is known by most people as road tax. What is to argue about that?

So do you want all the cars that pay zero VED off the roads as well?

I think the road tax argument is pretty lame anyway, give that the stats say something like 90% of cyclists own at least one car as well.

I lied by the way; I only pay tax on one of my cars. The other is tax exempt.

Cyclists are liars.

This is why I love having a motorbike, I get the best of both worlds of being as fast as a car but can filter through slow traffic like a cyclist. I used to cycle so I know what its like and know how dangerous it can be. If you're stuck behind a cyclist the likelihood its less than 20 seconds but if you're stuck in a traffic jam then you are part of the problem, yet you don't complain!
What annoys me is people stuck in traffic jams who complain about motorbikes/cyclists filtering in front of them, we're not the ones causing the jam so why should we wait behind you!:p

Yeah, but you can't ride down my old route to work - 9 miles of car free promenade beside the sea.

On a nice day, you couldn't have paid me to take the car to work.

Of course not, i just think they should pay tax regardless of the emissions they throw out.

Safety comes first as always, and it's a hell of a lot safer for a pushbike to be on the pavement than on the road. Yes, i understand they aren't allowed on the pavement unless it's a cycle lane, but i think the law should be changed so that they must use the pavement instead of the road. Would save a lot of lives and mostly eliminate the war between car and bicycle users. Obviously there would be exceptions where there are no pavements and the cyclist is forced to use the road and it is permitted to use the road in these circumstances.

It's a daft old fashioned law that needs updating. As daft as these farty 10m cycle lanes on the pavement that lead back on to the road. Waste of time spending money painting cycle lane lines in an attempt to increase the safety of the cyclist, but those lines then lead them back on to the road anyway. Just let them cycle on the pavement and be done with it.

Wait, you think cyclists should pay VED and use the pavement? Why not just charge pedestrians VED then? Absolute madness to say a cyclist is safer riding on the pavement than the road when they travel at 30mph. It would be pretty suicidal to do that in fact.

No.

A better solution would be if everyone stopped rushing around and drove/cycled with some due consideration for all other road users.

Can't we all just get along?

If you can't drive without worrying about hitting a cyclist then you really need to look at your driving.

Pay VED if they use the road yes, but not if they're on the pavement.

Suicidal to drive on the pavement at 30mph? Don't go so fast then. It's not as suicidal as driving at 30mph on the road when huge trucks and careless drivers are overtaking at 60mph on NSL roads, especially as i already mentioned where cyclists are dodging drain covers and debris in the gutter.

I can drive, but being around cyclists in certain situations does put me on edge i'll have to admit. Approaching islands etc They're so unpredictable at times and a lot of cyclists don't indicate or show you where they're going. It's in their best interest for the sake of their own lives, yet too many get complacent and don't indicate. Also, It's not just your own driving you have to look out for, it's the attitudes of other drivers and cyclists that you have to look out for, as well as your own obviously. I'm a prime example. Had my license since 1997 and never crashed into anyone, yet people have crashed into me over the years, including a cyclist who clipped my mirror bending it back.

Had a problem with such cyclists today. Speed limit was 60, they were riding two abreast on country roads. Refused to pull over, creating a huge stream of traffic as the roads were not safe to overtake. Thankfully I wasn't driving....

Careless drivers shouldn't be on the road full-stop. If they cant keep a safe distance between them and another vehicle they need their license taking off them.

Bikes, cars, lorries, tanks. They all move unpredictably at times and if you can't handle that you are the problem. Dodging drain covers is no excuse, give them enough room to dodge at all times! It is no different to cars, if you don't give them enough room to cope with the unpredictable, your a **** driver.
