How so? I prefer a smaller gap to go around tbh.

if you're overtaking then you should leave a big gap anyway... which means you're going to be into the opposite lane while overtaking anyway

if you're only having to overtake one bike length rather than two bike lengths + a gap between them then you don't have to be in the opposite lane for as long and will be quicker overtaking them

But if you put your foot down the length gap doesn't really matter and most of the time you only need your wheels on the line rather than over on this particular road. Side by side however means you must go the same speed as them which is rather irritating I must say.

I'm not out to endanger people or whatever I just think cyclists shouldn't pick busy roads to do their hobby, same with horses.

So after doing some (hilariously bad) cycling in Holland I've discovered something.

Over there the cycle paths are basically a fully separate road network alongside but separate from the roads so they don't really mix with cars.

So much of what many cyclists say is needed here as much of the bad behaviour of cyclists is making sure they're safe on the roads or using the pavement because they want to be safe

Well what I found was even with their own bike only roads cyclists are ***** the locals on the old 40's style bikes are OK on the paths but refuse to stop at pedestrian crossings just ring their bell at people.

And the lycra clad crew when riding down the cycle lanes compelelty ignore the markings (they're 2 lanes like a road with a dotted line with traffic going both ways) and ride 4 abreast so 2 of them on the wrong side and force people out of the way.

What is it with the mentality of bicycle riders that they just think that any common sense shouldn't apply to them?

Although I will admit it's hilarious when they lycra crew come upon a scooter coming flying down (on the correct side) and they all have to try and dive back in behind each other

There are more idiots sitting behind a wheel Tefal, and their idiocy is far more dangerous. I suggest you direct your angst in that direction.

I saw someone the other day, didn't pay road tax, no lights and went through a red light as they were too busy reading texts on their mobile phone to notice!

Oh it's this thread again, just the other day I had 2 cyclists side by side on a busy A road, was taking the biscuit tbh.

Gas them, gas them all.

TBH main A road at rush hour is a no if you value your life. I bet you drive a BMW? ;)

Riding side by side is safer as it gives more road presence and hopefully the driver is good enough to see that?

The cycle routes in the UK are a joke.... every time I go on a cycle path I get a puncture because some bits have been blown off the road (1ft wide grass in-between road and path works wonders!) or drunk chavs have smashed bottles so I'd ride on the road even if there is a cycle path. As long as you're safe and visible the onus is on the overtaker...

Because you're only on the other carriageway for 1 bike length, not 2. Since you should be giving cyclists as much passing space as a car you shouldn't be forced out into the other carriageway any further by taking 2 bikes riding abreast hence it's safer.

Do the "no road tax" retards also use the same argument against these people in cars that are not really cars? You know, with 900cc engines and they pay no tax at all?

Or how about those folk with diesel cars that pay 30 quid a year, are they worthy of being in your way with their cheapo tax contributions?

That smaller gap becomes more noticeable on a push bike... it's like overtaking horses - too close and you freak them out which means they might go into the road more... and then bang.... you're scraping them off your bonnet.

I used to cycle a lot and would keep out the way of cars, no need for this 'I have the right to get in the way' malarkey, and horses are not the same as cyclists.

cars do so much more damage to the roads and to the world I'm amazed they ever got rid of road tax.... and then we have VW... lol

maybe that's why we can't afford to have an NHS or Police any more?

When I overtake cyclists I give them the same amount of room I'd give a car as I was overtaking - no more, no less.

I admit - some cyclists are idiots. I hate them as much as you. But you get minorities in everything - keeping out of the way too much actually puts you in danger. If they pas too close you've got nowhere to go except the ditch or their vehicle. It's all about being safe. I'm recovering from being knocked off - doing nothing wrong except the driver didn't see me with lights and a Hi-Viz on because they were too busy on their phone or not actually paying attention to the road.... cars kill and it's about time people respected that. Technically they are more dangerous than guns and anyone gets to drive one....

Horses get more respect than cyclists.

If you actively try to "keep out of the way" by darting in and out of lane, jumping on and off of the path, and hugging the curb when you do ride on the road you're actually posing a much bigger danger to both yourself and other road users/pedestrians because of how unpredictable you are, how invisible you can be and how much you limit your options if you ever need to avoid an obstacle or pothole or person.
