It's the day many people lost their fathers, sons and grandfathers. Non of them should be forgotten, all missed.

Sad thing is I lost my gradfather 10 years ago and I still miss him too.

How long have we got to 'force' young people to remember and how long do we go back in history?
I wouldn't be shocked if a 26 year old didn't know our troops were in Afghanistan.

BTW, I spent my honeymoon in 1980 at Normandy and other war sites.

Because had the sacrifices of WWII not have been made, it's fair to say we'd all be speaking German now in a Europe devoid of Jews, Gypsies, the disabled and countless other "undesirable" groups the Nazis tried to exterminate.

If we don't learn from our past we are doomed to make the same mistakes in our future, the fact WWII isn't taught these days merely makes those mistakes to be made by future generations all the more likely.

But how far do you want to go back? - Romans, Vikings and other assorted wars & fights?
Let's not lose track of what this thread is about, I take an interest in our past and I've travelled all over Europe to pay homage to our veterans, I've stood at the Cenotaph every year since 1980 BUT I didn't get into it until I was 22, before that I didn't give 2p for wars and stuff.
If people don't know what D-Day is then so what because one day they might show an interest when they are older.
My eldest daughter (26) knew nothing about the WW2 until she went to Auschwitz around 5 years ago and now she stands at the Cenotaph with me and my Mum.

Personally it gets to me how very few people turn up for Rememberance Sunday and I'm not talking about kids, I'm talking about people in my age group 55 and above.

Considering that veterans of these actions are still alive that to me says they should be remembered! Perhaps living memory should be held to be the limit but then look at the defence of thermopylae...that's still remembered to this day!

Everyone knew including Germans that the war was over after 1943 defeat in Stalingrad... Without D-Day soviets would`ve won anyway without allied landing. Maybe it would've taken them extra year, maybe less since Nazi war machine was completely obliterated by 1944.

What D-day did was to stop soviets capturing all regions down to Spain, thats what it did.. Pretty much trolled Soviet Union.

Battle of Kursk/Stalingrad even winter war make look D-day like a piece of crap :D

I mean in both wars Germans sent I think nearly 90% of their armed forces into Eastern Front, I dont think the 10% that the allied took out would`ve had any impact at all on the Soviets winning the war, since by the time russians got to berlin they outnumbered germans I think it was 1 to 10 in manpower/tanks/artilery ect ect... Soviets in 1 night during siege of Berlin launched more shells on Berlin than all allied bombings put together...

You forgot to mention about UK/USA bombing of infrastructure.
Also the USSR were told about Kirsk, as the Brits had deciphered the code about an attack.

So Russia relied on the west to help them.

It's very subjective, there are quite a few things I would put above D-Day as more important. The discovery of penicillin, as mentioned earlier, the discovery of the germ and possibly pasteurisation. I would have also included the invention of the printing press, but that's just over 500 years now.

I would say that these events have had more impact on the world as a whole than D-Day.
