* D R I V E *

I understand not enjoying the film but to call it appalling is just ludicrous. Empire, Digital Spy, Shortlist, Filmoria and many other sites named it their film of the year. We all have opinions but some people just have bad taste in films.

Yeah, if we based what was actually a good film on what critics said, then we are in trouble.

They quite often change their tune 6 months down the line depending on how it did at the box office or the publics critical perception.
They often fall over themselves to over rate films such as this as well.

I love the hate for film critics on this site.

I just gave you 4 large sites that all hold Drive in very high regard and you aren't even willing to take their opinion into consideration.

I read Kermode's book recently and he's so right...the role of a critic is to do nothing but be a critic, no one cares what they have to say and box office figures have very little relation to their opinion.

So your logic is basically: because critics have been known to be wrong in the past, whenever you disagree with them must be another one of those occasions?

Drive has received acclaim from the most esteemed critics around. It has won awards all around the world. Regular members of the public and cinephiles alike have claimed they absolutely love it. Just because it wasn't for you, there's no possible way you can logically explain why all of the people who laud it are wrong.

I'm glad we can all conclude Lima was talking ****.

Just for reference, I enjoyed Drive a lot more 2nd time round. Most probably because of being able to recognize the soundtrack.

I had 2 copies of the DVD prior to release but wanted the steel book too :p

The Steelbook is very nice, I got one too, a good buy :).

I'm another that thinks Drive is absolutely brilliant. When I first watched I was expecting something different, I read the blurb on IMDb and was basically expecting an action film, non stop with a crap love story tied to it, I suppose like The Transporter or something. Nothing like what it actually is though.

I loved it, and the blu-ray looks and sounds fantastic, will definitely watch it again soon.

then the more likely scenario is that it was always his plan to drive the guys there and leave the car there even without cops.

Of course it was, that's why he had the hat with him... and listening intently to the radio the whole time.

This film is awesome. The fact that it's nothing like 'Transporter' is a good thing

Yes, it was a fact...that is was an 'artsy fartsy pos'

I love the way it's deemed fine to slate it as an artsy pos but the second someone criticizes conventional hollywood narratives with predictable endings it all

well im glad you agree and state it as a FACT thats it is indeed an 'arty fasrty Piece of ****'

OK....

Appalling, OK, maybe not, and there are indeed many worse films. I was using a strong word to emphasise my point. But to be more accurate I would just say I watched this film and thought it was bad (for reasons previously explained).

Gustav,

There were only 3 responses from other people and you then post saying I'm glad 'we all' think that Lima is talking ****?...check the other 3 pages of the thread, whilst the popular consensus is that people liked it...there are numerous people that didn't like it.

and the comment by atbpx was correct. When films come out some critics are basically paid to give them 4 or 5 stars. The film then show these fabricated ratings on the poster or even on the DVD cover. Now a truly awful film was GI Joe....(worst film I've ever watched in the Cinema). That got rave reviews and was all over the tabloids showing 4 stars and coining terms like 'fantastic' 'action film of 2010' etc etc.....Some critics are genuine....MANY are paid.

Enjoyment V Quality.

I enjoyed Drive, I thought it was style over substance on the whole, but still a very good film. Easily one of the best films of the last year in my humble opinion.

Dark, moody thriller with fantastic performances. Beautiful editing, imagery, cinematography and and utterly brilliant sound track.

You might not of ~enjoyed Drive, but you can't say it's not a very well made film.

I found this to be really overrated too.

The trailer made it out to be a none stop action film. The violence was pretty good but Gosling and Mulligan had no chemistry whatsoever and their conversations (or lack of) was so awkward to watch. Found it to be a real disappointment.

You couldn't feel the sexual tension?

Learn how the industry works before you talk such nonsense! I wouldn't say there are 'numerous' people saying it was rubbish. The majority have enjoyed it.

loved the film, one of the few of 2011 that i have sinced rewatched. tension is the key for me, and this had loads of it. loved the style too.

Believe it or not - not everyone that disliked this film just 'didn't get it' or are too dumb to understand it......I understood completely what the film was 'trying' to achieve and yet I still thought it was an appalling film. Please don't think this is a clever film because it is far from it. ;)

Just watched this last night - one of the best films I have seen in the last year or so.

just reading trhough some of the posts above from people who obviously "really" disliked the film, and I'm trying to understand why people sound as though they would have walked out at points.....

Lima - What would you term as a "clever" film then ?

boring as hell!

I can "sort-of" see why people would think that - and it's nothing to do with them not getting the point of the movie of anything to do with inteligence etc....

It is all to do with what people enjoy in movies. There's approx 20 of us guys in work who have worked together for many years and we regularly chat about movies. Whats funny is, the same "type" of people always enjoy the same type of movies. There's the guys that enjoy more films with no plots - no thinking involved - action movies. The guys that enjoy more musicals, chick flicks etc - the guys that enjoy more Sci-Fi/CGI movies and guys that enjoy westerns, or movies with just one major actor and nothing else.

Just out of curiosity - have you watched "No country for old Men" ?

If so - did you think that was good, average, poor ?

My review... not as bad as No Country for Old Men, which was a terrible movie.

At least Drive had a main protagonist and a storyline.
